Title: Pitch Inspection
Post by: 4D on Thursday, January 14, 2010, 23:56:15
Is there likely to be one for Saturday? If so, is there any chance we'll know before Saturday morning?

Given the levels of uncertainty so far, I reckon it's worth keeping your ears peeled tomorrow. You never know, they might make a decision then.

I looked on the OS and the picture of the ground looks "cold". It even looks like snow has blown up to the back of the DRS at one end

The best way to find out is if we get any loan players in tomorow. If we do then Wilson thinks the game is on,if we dont then i doubt it :)

Have you really got snow blown back up your end? That must be uncomfortable

More seriously, following his comments about our away games that have been cancelled, I think Wilson will want an early decision on this a la Franchise, rather than leaving it till the last minute, Stockport stylee

I think it will be on, we are expecting a fair bit of rain on Saturday and will be quite mild around 7-8 degrees, that snow will disappear pretty quickly I think.
Just be left with a waterlogged pitch :)

Can't see it being on if the pitch is snow covered and the machinery can't be used.

Oh well.

I don't think Snow is the problem though as that can be cleared with a few volunteers it is whether the pitch is frozen underneath with all the freezing temps we have had, especially the side by the DRS - I'd be surprised if it is on

I was under the impression that snow can actually help as it can insulate the ground from the more freezing temperatures.

Wish they would hurry up yes or no. I do have 2 sets of plans if its on or off.... Just want to know now. I would imagine with the rain it will be on as the snow seems to be clearing quite quick so if they can get people out to clear the snow today should thaw by tomorrow. I say pitch inspection will be at 9am tomorrow.

I heard DW on Wilts Radio say that the pitch underneath the snow is fine. It's just the snow needs clearing. As the snow on the pitch has not been compressed into ice I expect it to be game on as it will thaw by 3pm sat

Post by: jimmy_onions on Friday, January 15, 2010, 09:48:38
Temp shouldn't get anywhere near zero between now and 3pm, should be ok.

Looking forward to this one....no football for a couple of weeks, plus gills, plus a little more spice owing to the 5-0.

Expecting quite a turnout.

I hope the game is off ... forecast is good for the pitch to be cleared but I dont like the sound of the hurricane winds coming for Saturday.
We need to play Gillingham on a good surface and calmer conditions, with a very wet pitch and high winds the game will be a lottery, we need to give this lot a good thrashing, which I believe we would if the conditions were favourable.

Yes, first game of the season, never a good time to play a newly promoted side. That was then, this is now ... we are the form side playing with confidence, only one result if conditions are fair and even.

I don't care if it's wet, or cold, or windy. A 1-0 win will do just fine.

The last time we played them at the CG, we beat them also 5-0, but really we should've had 10. They were the worst side I have ever seen at the CG.

the pitch should have been cleared yesterday.if it is off it is stfc's fault.
they asked for help last year when it was always going to be a struggle to get the game on.this weekend is a different situation where there is a much better chance of the game being played.yet no request for volounteers to clear the pitch.

Apprently they are asking for volunteers this morning?? Bit late maybe?? Surely most people are at work??

Title: Re: Pitch Inspection
Post by: Mplanney on Friday, January 15, 2010, 10:43:52
Not sure why they haven't asked for volunteers to clear the pitch as when i helped last time it was a much bigger job than i anticapated.

A couple of scoops of snows and your wheelbarrows full and you'd only cleared half a foot square on snow, although may be easy this time.

1 reason for the lack of request maybe of damage to the pitch, last time it had covers underneath, so there was some extra protection from someone putting a spade through and pulling up half the turf, this time there probably isn't.

Where did you hear this, no mention on the OS, which i have thought the'd put first.

Strange thing is when we did this last year the removal didn't start till friday pm and the conditions weren't improving that much but I had a better feeling that was gonna go ahead than this one.

I see its now on the OS

My mate has text me down there, says the pitch is fine under the snow apart from in front of the DRS where it is a bit hard but with the temperatures rising it should clear up by tomorrow. Thinks the game will be on as of 4:30 but heard that even if it passes the inspection today, they may do an inspection tomorrow at 9am.

GAME ON!

http://www.swindontownfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10341~1933894,00.html

Quote
After a Herculean pitch-clearing effort from Swindon Town staff, youth team and supporters, tomorrow's match against Gillingham will now go ahead.

Referee Steve Tanner recently completed a pitch inspection, and passed The County Ground surface fit to play.

Over 100 people, including pupils from Marlborough College, removed over three inches of snow from the pitch within seven hours which, combined with a rise in temperatures, has allowed the match to be played.

Town will be hoping to avenge their 5-0 drubbing at the hands of The Gills on the opening day of the season, and have new striker Vincent Pericard available for selection.

Tickets are priced from just £16 for the match and can be purchased at The County Ground before the match tomorrow.

A big 'well done' to those involved with the snow clearance today. Yet I find one aspect slightly puzzling, if not annoying. Much has been said recently with regard to the club engaging with the local community and, at the same time, attempting to attract younger supporters. Lo and behold, we find kids from Marlborough College (10 miles away and with no local affiliation) clearing our pitch while Swindon kids don't get involved. Any ideas ?

There we have it then. The pupils from Marlborough Colledge were actually teachers and dinner ladies in disguise. The Adver geezer got suspicious after noticing several tall people wearing shorts, carrying hockey sticks and chanting ''tally ho, let's go, there's only one Charles Awstin innit''.
