Build it yourself on there. I recently got a quad core AMD, 4gb RAM, Nvidia 9800GT, 500gb HDD for less than £400. tesco do reasonable packages or go to dell direct if you dont mind waiting. http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/desktop-inspiron-545s?c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1 Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: Chubbs on Thursday, September 24, 2009, 09:18:20 Those Alienware computers have always been horribly overpriced i know, i was just being fickle, due to the lack of info given by 4d. I actualy customised in and spec'd it up to the max it cam up about $9,932 but it woulnt let me post that one. :-) Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: Sippo on Thursday, September 24, 2009, 09:29:12 I might buy myself one of those for work!

I actualy customised in and spec'd it up to the max it cam up about $9,932 but it woulnt let me post that one. :-) Oh I'd already assumed that by the fact it had 'Dell' in the link :) You can buy a Thai bride with that sort of money. Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: Barry Scott on Thursday, September 24, 2009, 09:41:15 Bought a desktop from this eBay seller (http://computers.shop.ebay.co.uk/Desktop-PCs-/179/i.html?_catref=1&_fln=1&_ipg=&_ssn=centralcomp_media&_trksid=p3911.c0.m282) recently and he seems to have some great prices.
Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: Peter Venkman on Thursday, September 24, 2009, 09:55:19 Theres loads of good cheap deals out there, wat is your price range? what do you want to do with it? Do you want an operating system included etc etc
Avoid Intel Celery(celeron) or older AMD Phenom processors, go for a minimum of dual core (2.4ghz+ speed), 2gb ram, 500gb hard drive and dont get one with dedicated onboard graphics, even an 8400gs (£12.50p) is better than onboard. Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: RJack on Thursday, September 24, 2009, 10:25:14 Seriously build one yourself there so easy to build yourself these days. Shop & online prices are so inflated it's disgraceful considering a lot only put cheap parts in.
I built a Quad Core 955 (Black Edition) ASUS GFX Mobo 8GB Reaper Ram 4890 HD RAdeon GFX Card 1TB HDD OCZ Heat Pipe (CPU Cooler) Antec 300 Gaming Case I also orded a Iiyana 24" HD monitor all came to less than £600 Try and build that spec on a specialist site and that price will literally double. Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: Peter Venkman on Thursday, September 24, 2009, 11:03:08 I would be very very surprised if you can get that spec for anything under £750 at the moment RJack, the exchange rate is not favourable.
You also have to price in an operating system which will add another £70+ on top of that and running a 4890 you will need a fucking good 650w+ PSU as they eat electric (another £70+ for a good one). But in essence you are correct, if you have the time and the inclination then building your own PC can be cheaper and rewarding. Have a look there - currently they are offering some pretty good deals with part built PC's I was up there visiting them last week and they are selling a cracking amount of kit through this method.... Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: flammableBen on Thursday, September 24, 2009, 12:03:30 Isn't that the BBC Model A and not the more popular Model B? The best version of Basic ever. I'd love to find a cheap working BBC, there must still be old school store cupboards full of them. Look I've still got my little box of disks. http://j.photos.cx/IMG_0445-fe4.jpg That bottom one could contain almost anything. The mystery is driving me mad. Old floppy disks smell nice Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: Peter Venkman on Thursday, September 24, 2009, 12:10:03 Old floppies do have a sort of oily, almost dieselly afternote!
There are a few on Ebay going for around £25, I did used to love playing Elite and writing teletext pages at college on them back in 83-84. The feel of the keyboard in comparison to the feel of the "dead fish" spectrum keyboard was awesome. Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: Peter Venkman on Thursday, September 24, 2009, 13:58:34 Loved Elite, Revs, Knightlore, Beach Head, Zaxxon, Sabre Wolf, Frak & JSW etc but those obviously arent exclusive to the beeb.
The Model B was far in advance of everything available at the time (81-83) it is rightly a classic. Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: tans on Thursday, September 24, 2009, 14:00:20 jet set willy

Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, September 24, 2009, 19:37:20 I've heard really good things about the BenQ G2220 HD for a monitor under 150 notes.
Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: jonny72 on Thursday, September 24, 2009, 19:41:03 I always go for the cheapest monitor I can find of the size I want, that has got good reviews on Amazon (or somewhere similar). Last one I bought was a Hanns-G 19" for under £100 (it was a while ago) and its perfect.
Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: Nomoreheroes on Thursday, September 24, 2009, 19:57:39 Hmmm. That doesnt sound 'as cheap as chips' to me!

Piece of piss. Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: Simon Pieman on Friday, September 25, 2009, 06:36:07 I see what you are saying Si, I just come unravelled at the words "build it yourself" Don't they build it for you? I thought you specced it up and then they build it to order, perhaps I didn't get the right idea. If you can build lego you can build a pc, but I can understand why someone wouldn't want to do this. It's definitely far easier than putting together some flat pack furtniture with dodgy instructions, though I must admit I've never had any problems with that too. Title: Re: I need to buy a new PC (and Monitor) Post by: Sippo on Friday, September 25, 2009, 07:09:16 Hmmm. That doesnt sound 'as cheap as chips' to me! A flat screen 19" monitor can cost around £80. That is cheap in my eyes.
