Title: Re: Holiday Destinations Post by: STFC4LIFE on Monday, August 10, 2009, 20:25:34 Got back from Gran Canaria this morning, flight was at 3:10, havn't slept and have to be up for work at 6:30 tomorrow morning :(.
Nice place, it only cost me and the girlfriend around £675, (I think) self catering for one week, which wasn't to bad as she's a teaching assistant so had to go away in schol holidays. Alot of nice restaurants there, lovely weather but, didn't seem much to do in the evenings entertainment wise and also seemed quite quiet, alot of empty bars. It's a bit busier and there are a few nice bars along the beach front with singers etc, but they are a bit more expensive. There are some nice sights as well, mountains etc, it is quite a nice place. Hope this helps. Title: Re: Holiday Destinations Post by: axs on Monday, August 10, 2009, 20:26:34 Budapest. Beautiful city loads to do and reasonably cheap(ish) as they're not in the Euro yet. Title: Re: Holiday Destinations Post by: Dazzza on Monday, August 10, 2009, 20:38:20 I quite fancy that, any recommendations on area to stay? We stayed at the Lanchid, which is a "boutique" and “design” hotel and it was handy enough location wise , right by the main bridge and the busses fly past every 5-10 minutes. I managed to knock them down half the price off the rack rate before we left and blagged an upgrade on arrival and to be honest I wouldn’t have been overly impressed had I coughed up full whack. It was nice, the staff we’re good and it was clean but it was a pretty soulless place although you wouldn’t spend that long in your hotel anyway. TripAdvisor is worth a look but location try and get as close as you can to the city centre. http://www.lanchid19hotel.hu/ The site is a bit slow at the moment but have a gander and don’t be fooled by the photos. Worth a punt if you can knock em down on price. Loads to do and see while you’re there and 5 to 7 nights is spot on. http://www.lanchid19hotel.hu/ Title: Re: Holiday Destinations Post by: tans on Monday, August 10, 2009, 20:41:53 I would like to go to Iceland, but never met anyone who has been there. Budapest could be really hot, cracking city though im going to try and dig out a website that was renting flats for a week, was dead cheap when me and my mate went 3 or 4 years ago. I would definately avoid the eurozone if you can, we have been hit to fuck in the exchange rate.
How about marrakesh? im pretty sure easyjet fly there so would be dirt cheap. Title: Re: Holiday Destinations Post by: RobertT on Monday, August 10, 2009, 21:25:31 Austria/Northern Italy - go between the two countries on the train, amazing journey through the Alps. Innsbruck was a lovely City surrounded by mountains and a river, not too pricey. Trentino area is gorgeous in Northern Italy and we didn't need to buy any food because we got loads of food with every drink we purchased (Tapas style but free).
Nice was bloody fantastic but you'll require a mortgage sized loan to spend more than a couple of days there. You're right about the food Mex....it's because Bulgaria is quite a poor country racked by years of oppression. They do like eating frogs and snails though. Because of the poverty they're genuinely happy to see tourists and are a friendly bunch. I like it around there...whenever in Lynmouth though, I think of the Boscastle style flood, in Lynmouth 30 odd people perished whereas amazingly no-one in Boscastle. http://www.lyntonandlynmouth.info/images/floodb3.jpg When it rains around there, it's often quite severe. Some years back I was camping up on Exmoor alongside the East Lyn river, and had been out on the lash....had sausages on a campfire on the river bank before hitting the sack, woke the next morning to find most of the remains of said fire, washing around under the flysheet. Title: Re: Holiday Destinations Post by: Arriba on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, 09:57:15 went there on friday reg.learned about the flood disaster and the conspiracy about it.

I'd forgotten about the conspiracy theory...for those wanting to know, it was widely believed that the clouds had been "salted" by the MoD as part of a research project. Reminds me a bit of the news that came out a while back that Swindon had been sprayed with some sort of virus in the 50's as part of an experiment by Porton Down. Pretty much what arriba said. Its not too big, so its easy to walk around. The tramway thing that links Lynton to Lynmouth is worth a go, provided you aren't scared of heights. We've just found a little beach at Kilve. Its a little village on the A39 about half way between Minehead and Bridgwater, so for me its about a 40 minute drive. When we left there on Sunday, having had a lovely picnic, there were a total of about 10 people there. Stunning place and only 2 quid to park all day. Title: Re: Holiday Destinations Post by: CliffP on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, 21:17:16 I've been to Iceland - well worth a visit for the Blue Lagoon , Gulfoss ,Geysirs etc but hideously expensive due to the fact it's a small place that is mostly uninhabitable hence they have to import most of the stuff that you wish to eat and drink .
Downtown Reykjavik is pretty good , loads of decent bars and restaurants and of course the obligatory English and irish pubs. Also due to the American influence ( the US had a base in Keflavik for years ) there are plenty of fast food outlets ( Taco Bell ,Maccy D's ,Burger King ,Dominos) should you not fancy the local Icelandic delicacies of rotten shark meat and dried herring. Downside is the once you have found the Maccy D's you'll pay the equivalent of £10 for a Big Mac ! Title: Re: Holiday Destinations Post by: pauld on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, 21:27:48 the local Icelandic delicacies of rotten shark meat and dried herring. Bloke I used to work with went to Iceland and brought some of that shark meat back, in a jar in brine (I think, although from the smell it could have been rancid piss). No-one could be persuaded to try it as it absolutely reeked until one divvie decided to give it the big I am. Took one swill of the brine out of the jar and predictably spat it out in disgust, most of it going all over him. He spent the rest of the morning smelling like he'd pissed himself (and that with some kind of unpleasant fungal infection) till we made him go home to change.Title: Re: Holiday Destinations Post by: Reg Smeeton on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, 21:36:09 Isn't the world's only penis museum in Reykjavik?
