I sort of agree, if only because the last series ended on a minor cliff hanger. If it hadn't then I'm not so sure, it'd been running out of steam since the end of the second series, jumped the shark massively in the third and the return to the classic format hadn't quite worked out in the fourth.

No. As soon as I saw this thread I thought not that. Gervais has never regretted stopping it and I agree with him. It was just 2 series and a Christmas special of absolute unrivalled quality that changed comedy. Yeah sure, it could have still been really good for a couple more series and it would have been fun to see what it would have been like but its better to just leave it and say there was no drop in quality.

You can always watch the american office if you want more of something similar.

Agree with darkplace.

The Wire - it ended brilliantly but left you desperately wanting more
ER - although it had become a bit stale it was still miles ahead of most TV dramas

I'd have to go for classic kids tv programmes, you watched them for years and when you buy the dvd it turns out they only ever made 13 episodes;

- Trumpton
- Fingerbobs
- The Flumps
- Mr Benn

Spaced

Pretty certain Simon Pegg said they're not done with Spaced yet and there will be more at some point - most likely another series rather than a film. Think it was when Jonathan Ross interviewed him about Star Trek.

The Office was shit.

Certainly overrated.  It had it’s moments of genius but there was far to much flannel and hype surrounding it all and I think old beardy tub did the right thing at the right time when he pulled it.

Give me a re-run of On the Busses any day of the week.  Now there's real life.

Great comedy. Thought it lost a lot when Jeff (Richard Coyle) left. I suppose it was doomed as Davenport was off playing with pirates around then anyway. Rrrrr.

Still at least Moffitt has a show back on the screen soon(ish), he's writing Dr. Who.

And the episodes he's already written have been the best ones.

He's also writing a new sherlock holmes series for BBC One.

Jonathan Creek is the best shout so far.

Bought them all on DVD recently, still quality to watch. Should deffo roll out a new series.

Although I think it had more left, they were right to can it when they did. Go out on a high, rather than drag it out and leave the last series feeling weak. Which, although I love it, is what the Wire did IMO

They did a special at Xmas and there will be another one next Easter. Amazing that its been running over 12 years now and they've only managed to do 26 episodes so far. Not sure why they aren't making more, what else does Alan Davis do other than QI?

the last series of the Wire was a bit disappointing in some respects but I think the inevitability of the impending ending was difficult to ignore. I did love the last episode though.

Definitely agree - I was shocked to hear they wound it up after series 2 in the States (and I'm sure I heard a rumour that they didn't even showthe final episode!)

Brass Eye and Father Ted are good shouts.

I also reckon a series called Jack and Jill.

It was an American drama love story thing that only ran for 2 seasons i think. But i loved the female co-star (Amanda Peet) so much that i even watched re runs. :-[

She is THE most beautiful woman on the planet. Here's some pictures i took.

I think Brass Eye is perfect at the seven episodes made.  Not sure how many more issues they could have covered, other than perhaps immigration.

Never heard of it - if it makes it to TV could you chuck a reminder on here?  Wouldn't want to miss that one.

Don't think it will be on for a while. Not even sure what format it will take. Sounds like it's more likely to be sitcom style than some sort of mocumentary if the wikipedia article is anything to go by:

Quote
Morris told The Sunday Times that the film will seek to do for Islamic terrorism what Dad's Army, the classic BBC comedy, did for the Nazis by showing them as "scary but also ridiculous".

It's got a reference to the interview but I'm too lazy to follow it.

Before it got picked up by film4 he was going to get fans to pay £50 to appear as extras as a way to help fund it. Well according to a mate anyway.

Amanda Peet was lovely in Studio 60.

My big shout out would go to:

Invasion,
and possibly Generation Kill.

But maybe the latter was so good because it was relatively short.

Friends?  Really?  I don't think I've ever seen a dead horse more flogged.

They did try flogging it more with Joey, which was a flop.

Though that was the weakest spin off they could do, I'd have liked to see them do "The Bings" - Chandler and Monica living in the suburbs with kids. Except no one else actually wanted to do a spin off.

I'm not sure after how long it went on for any spin off would have worked, they rarely do.  The one obvious exception is of course Frasier, which was far better than Cheers.  And far, far, far better than Friends for what its worth.

To be truly great you have to go out on a high note, therefore you can't go all the way to the end.  You'll either be left wanting more, or disappointed, and I know which I'd rather have.

My initial reaction was to say Spaced.  In hindsight, I think I might throw up if they do bring out some crappy update.

Operation Good Guys - perfected the fly-on-the wall doc/comedy 10 years before Ricky Gervais claimed to have invented it

Weird, considering Ricky Gervais' biggest influence in that genre is Christopher Guest who worked in that genre in the early 1980's (there was mockumentary films before that too). I see no problems in folks disliking stuff but you're making things up!

I really liked The Office but people went a bit mental for it, like Peter Kay (whatever happened to him?).

Anyway, my shout is Arrested Development - it was given a farcical final episode after they found out it was cancelled.

Also, King of the Hill.

I'd have said Futurama but they've brought it back.
