Title: Fear of flying
Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Monday, June 1, 2009, 11:14:19
Just wondering if anyone else HATES flying? Why do stupid planes have to go missing/crash a few days before I go on holiday?  - my bad dreams about plane crashes have started up again too  >:(

Mind you its not just fear of crashing that makes me hate flying - Its lots of things - like being squidged in the plane and feeling all cloustrphobic and the way its so cold and dry in planes arrgggghhhhh grrrrr  >:(

Tell me Im not the only freak?

missus used to be terrified of flying, but after me dragging her around the world every couple of months she seems to have got over the worst of it. Still needs a stiff drink before each flight though.

I'm not very enthusiastic, but have never let it stop me going anywhere. Mines different though it's not the flying bit i worry about, it's the crashing and burning bit i'm not keen on.

Flying doesn't bother me, if anything I find it boring.

I was once on a flight that started leaking in water when it started raining. When asked the stewardess said it was normal, we landed safely but I still don't believe that leaky planes are normal.

My worst experience though was sat on a short haul plane when a fat family boarded with a macdonalds each, the fat cunts stunk the plane out for the whole trip.

Definately not, i know loads of people who hate it.

My Bro in law wont go on hols at all he would rather go fishing for 2 weeks than get on a plane.

We gave a friend of mine valium before he come to Thailand with us as he was shitting himself about the flight. That chilled him right out, maybe too much in fact as he nearly missed the flight due to walking around aimlessly in duty free like a spazzo.

I quite like flying, but only have 2 short haul trips this year so its not as bad.

The only time I was a bit freaked out was when the plane came to land at Heathrow few years back and suddenly swooped back into the air as there was another plane already on the runway!

Ok then so I think Im scared of flying and crashing

I wish they would just hurry up and tell me whats happened to this air France plane - Ive just been sat in the office discussing whether you would rather die on a Hijacked plane or just a straight crash!!!

One of the American guys I work with is very large, huge in fact, to the point that whenever he takes a flight he has to book and pay for 2 seats, just to be able to sit down.  It gets kind of funny though when he checks in only to find out that one of the seats is in row 4 and the other is in row 8 :)

I'm not a massive fan of flying and I agree it is a little unnerving to hear of an air accident prior to a journey of your own.

I was sitting in a bar at Chicago Airport in January watching breaking news footage of a plane identical to the one I was about to board floating around in the Hudson River..... it did unsettle me a bit I must say...

Hate it, although find that 2 or 3 valium and a glass of wine tends to make it bearable for me!

I'd rather be on a plane that falls apart at 35,000 feet than one that crash lands on the ground - at 35,000 feet death is pretty quick and painless (the oxygen starvation puts you a high before you pass out)

But then if you heard there was a car crash in the morning before you left for work it probably wouldn't make you nervous to drive, more likely a bit miserable because there could be more traffic about.

You're not alone JFW. I don;t like it too much, but now that my sister lives in Australia I've had to deal with it. I find a good drink or two helps, but the more you do it the more comfortable you get. Not that my mum would agree!

Simple answer: if you don't like it that much then don't go on holiday. if you insist on having your holiday then get on with it.

I pity the fool that don't like flying.
---

In answer to the original question, not that comfortable on planes. Used to go a bit clammy but it never stopped me going on holiday. But I got a lot better after going on the 30 odd seater twin prop Fokker to Maastricht. We went through turbulence and it was interesting to say the least. After that the larger planes seemed much more a comfortable experience.

Anyway 'enjoy' this:

Was on a jet back from Skiathos a few years back.  The runway there is short so planes take off with out much fuel, then land on the Greek mainland to refuel.
On this occasion we took off into a cloudless sky & landed 100 miles north in Thesalonika in the middle of a massive storm & a crosswind. we landed on one wheel & bounced back on to the other repeating the process all the way down that runway. Now that was fun!

I always hated flying, then 15 years ago I said enough was enough and haven't flown again since. Funny thing is I was actually in the USA at the time, ended up coming home on a boat. If I had to I could get on a plane again, but I'm not going to do something out of choice that freaks me out so much.

I fly very infrequently but I find it rather boring.

I'm not too bad with flying really although not a huge fan of taking off, I've flown a plane myself before which was good fun. One of my mates is a pilot and he's quite scared of heights but he's always been ok with flying which is probably for the best.

I fucking love flying. Taking off and feeling that huge surge of power and acceleration. Looking out the window when cruising and realising you're 3 miles up in the sky defying the laws of physics in a piece of metal weighing over 50 tonnes and traveling at 500 mph. Feeling that emmense reverse thrust when landing to bring that baby to a halt. Hell, I even like the shitty inflight meal. For me, the flight is all part of the holiday experience.
Though it is mostly fucking boring!

Talking of sheer power in planes I see the Vulcan is at Fairford this year. That thing is awesome & beats a B1 Bomber & Concorde

Tis awesome,  and a brilliant achievement to get it up in the air at all.

Slight shame the display isn't as awe inspiring as of the old one, probably no car alarm symphany. But got to preserve the engines as there aren't any spares :)

I'm not a big fan of flying - always feel nervous when taking off and landing. I wouldn't say I have a fear of it at all though. Having flown in a little 18-seater over the American mid-west, I now realise just how comfortable a large aircraft is!

You must be talking about the old HK airport where you had to fly almost touching the buildings on each side as you came down - BA would only ever send their best pilots there....

Its all changed these days - new airport and all very boring - they reclaimed land from the sea and built an airport on it - been there quite a few times and nothing at all hairy about it...

I still hate flying in general though - scares the shit out of me even though I fly a lot with work and have flown hundreds of times over the last 15 years - for me it never became easier !!!

I used to love but I've managed to develop a recent fear of flying.  Not so much that I can't get on a plane, but enough to make the flight generally a very stressful time with every bump causing me distress.  I can't sleep on them either.

This came about after flying back from the US in 2001 about 3 weeks after 9/11.  After take off the plane was extremely uncomfortable for some reason, kids crying etc.  The pilot then came on the PA to advise us there was a problem with the plane not being able to pressurise, so we had to be diverted to Indionapolis (on route from Orlando, so quite a detour).  Given the timing it was worrying on 2 levels.

My new fear wasn't then helped by flying Ryanair back from Reus through an almighty storm, I've never been bumped out of my seat so much on a plane before.  The air stewardesses looked decidedly worried, constantly on the phone to the cockpit, which in turn panicked the living shit out of me.

See you understand me! will the doctors give you medicine??

I actually think I have been worse since 9/11 as I was on holiday when it happened and had to fly home 2 days later and the feeling at the airport on on the plan was so stressed an uneasy it made me feel 10 times worse

I have a reocurring dream that Im sat in the County Ground watching a plane crash in the distance and I feel helpless as all I can do is watch.  everytime a plane flys even a little bit low during a match I totally freak!!

Depending on how bad you are they should give you something... i have only ever had drugs once before and it begun with a P but i dont remember what it was called, it was actually my doctors idea this time around as last year i had given up smoking for 7 months but started agian cos i knew i had to fly and stay sober/ drug free as it was just me and my son n the last thing i want is to pass my fear on to him! It was horrible. I sweat, cry, shake and stop breathing at times, proper numpty i am.

We're flying with ryan air so my boyfriend has paid for pre boarding cos i wanna be sure im sitting with him when i die :)

as for getting on with it...  i think thats what we are doing by actually flying? Some ppl dont like spiders, frogs, snakes etc but we all have to deal with them and by sharing ones experiances can always help another.

I've been on more planes than buses in the last 40 years, never really enjoyed the experience apart from the take off and the landing, the rest is pretty boring for me, it is just a way of life for all of us now.
JFW just to let you know you will be landing in heavy rain on Wednesday and possible thunderstorms, hope that makes you feel better - sorry I shouldn't have said that.

Lufthansa's B.C was pretty poor when we came back from HK. Though I think they were about to upgrade the crappy seats to flatbeds. Still beats the shit out of cattle class though.

I recommend Singapore Airways business lounge in Singapore Airport. Full bar with barman, hot and cold food, footy and rugby on the TV. Ws pissed off when our flight left.

I used to be scared of flying, but before going to America last year I want to the doctor and they gave me something that divers who are sea sick have, it stops you feeling all the little jumps and bumps and generally made me much calmer. Now flying is just an annoying experience having to wait in the airport and sit on the thing for hours, rather than being a scary experience.

Iv flown with Singapore Airways in economy and it is definately the best airline that i have flown with. The comfortable seats with personal tv's and the food were great but the stewardesses were to die for.  Chiangi airport is pretty cool too. i spent 12 hours there waiting for a flight to Bali and had a great time.

If peasent class was enjoyable then no doubt BC was top notch!

There's a little yellow trilander that flies between Guernsey & Jersey. The plane seats about 8 poeople with seperate doors for each row of two. Obviously the pilot sits in the front row, but all the passengers can see what he sees. The locals call it the yellow peril & I never understood why, until flying from Jersey once in quite high winds.
First of all it didn't  have the speed or the power to fly straight there into the wind so had to do a "dog leg" over france. On landing we approached the runway with the plane angled at 45 degrees only straightening up at the last second. Now that WAS a bit scary.

Iv flown with Singapore Airways in economy and it is definately the best airline that i have flown with.

Unfortunately I was flying Luftwaffe - they just share SA's lounge.

The entire story was that our flight back from HK was fully loaded, they were looking for volunteers to get bumped. Had to fly from HK to Singapore, then Singapore to Frankfurt (business class), then back to blighty. For our hasstle we got the long haul part as a business class upgrade and something like 600 Euro each in Lufthansa flight vouches. Which we partly used to go to NYC the next year and the rest was spent on in flight duty free.

The morale of the story - getting bumped from long haul flights can be a good thing if you don't have kids/urgency to get home.

The only disappointing aspect awas HK has long since moved its airport to Lantau, so no sky scraper crapping it flight.
