Title: Laptop keeps turning itself off
Post by: chalkies_shorts on Sunday, February 22, 2009, 19:51:17
Any advice - just started in the last few weeks and seems to be getting worse. It could be even when I@m typing something.

It's probably overheating. Try cleaning the vents and fan with compressed air, or if you're lazy and want to risk it, use a hoover - although you could fuck something up with a static charge, btu I think jjedmunds does this and has never had problems.

This is indeed true Si, yes you get static build up but it takes months to do so, blow or suck its pretty much the same results. :)

If its not overheating, you could have a dodgy motherboard. Which will mean new laptop most probably.

A dodgy motherboard would most likely not boot at all.

Replace the battery...or cleaning it could help.

Its pretty much always plugged into the mains so don't think its a battery issue.

Could be loads of things.

When it switches off does it restart?

Nope it doesn't restart. My first option is to disable Spybot resident mode - whether its a coincidence or not. My next option will be to clean the bugger - its not had a good clean since I had it. I'll see where I am with it then. Thanks for the replies.

Might also be a good idea to check your application and system logs for errors. To do do this go to start>run then type the line below and press ok:

COMPMGMT.MSC

This will bring up the computer management console. You can then select the event viewer in the left hand panel of that window.

How good is the battery? Does it hold a charge?

If the battery is bollocksed, take it out. My old laptop turned off all the time because the battery was old and fucked. Once it was removed, i had no problems.

Take the battery out and stick it in the freezer for 24 hours... this has three benefits...

1)It confuses the hell out of the missus the next time she look in the freezer

2)It will make your laptop feel 'cool' even when it actually looks shit

3)It will temporarily fix any over heating problems that may have been described above (due to it's coolness)

What it doesn't do is stop your laptop from turning itself off.  To fix this problem you have to drop it from a height of 6 feet onto a concrete floor.  This way it will never turn back on and so you will no longer have the problem of it turning itself off again

I would suggest not as the overheating will be caused by the processor/cooler and not the battery.
