Title: Swindon V Stockport Official Matchday Thread.
Post by: herthab on Tuesday, January 13, 2009, 08:50:13
The poor little loves should now be fully refreshed after their 15 day break, it'll be interesting to see DW's starting line up, I wonder if they'll be any surprises?

At least we'll see if it's the players who are shit, or previous management..........

How will we know?

I am guessing another passionless, effortless display under another new manager will confirm the players are just shit.

If they don't put in a decent display, it's probably because they're having a little tantrum about the mobile phone thing.

Im not sure whether to go to the match or go spinning

I now have some ear muffs which is swaying me towards the match but the size 8 bridesmaid dress is swaying me towards spinning - please can someone help me choose what to do?

Seriously thinking about jumping on a train back to Swindon for this game, seeing as I barely got to see any footy over Christmas. It's going to come down to a last minute decision at this rate - might see some of you later!

But then, in the unlikely event of a DW inspired half-decent performance it would be such a shame to miss out....

Why would you go spinning in a bridesmaids dress? Seems highly innapropriate fitness gear

First game in 2009, new manager (Whose hopefully had time to stamp his authority on the team) at home, first game in over a fortnight.

If you can go, you should go. This is the start of a new error! (Spelling is deliberate)

make or break this game.

This will really show whether the rest of this season has been down to the manager or the players. I still hold slight hope it was the manager because the players were good enough before he got here.

Another 'Brighton' performance and we've gone no where since we sacked Malpas and we are fucked for the season, unless Wilson can pull a few rabbits out of the hat in January, which he wont because no one wants to come here!!!

I am not sure DW will fix everything in 2 weeks. But I agree we need to show tonight we are moving in the right direction. 100% commitment for 90 minutes win lose or draw.

So have the players got the bottle and confidence to show it, or are they just shit?

I think and hope it's the former.

Tonight Im looking for the following

Lots of Effort and closing down of opposition
Organisation (particularly defensively)
Structure to our attacking play

These were all sadly lacking under Malpas ...

I agree 2 weeks won't solve a lot of the problems, but, after two weeks of uninterupted training, it should be clear from tonight's performance that improvements have been made.  If there is no, or little, sign of improvement then I will be very disappointed.

Title: Re: Swindon V Stockport Official Matchday Thread.
Post by: fatbury on Tuesday, January 13, 2009, 13:49:44
This would be my side for tonight
Id adopt a 4-5-1 formation

Brezovan
Smith Morrison Ifil Timlin
Marshall Easton Peacock Pook McNamee (with Peacock slightly ahead of Easton and Pook)
Cox

re the long term the positions id be looking for players are experience centre back (as Aljofree is either injured or not up to the job - he seems to have lost the zest for playing since Sturrock left)
Right winger - McGovern is no winger and Marshall is a bit raw -- perhaps Scott Murray here??
Centre midfielder ... Nalis has been poor .. we need an all action goalscoring captain type midfielder - Kavanagh would have been ace .. sadly we missed out there ... perhaps a loan signing from a Premiership reserve side??? someone line Mark Randall of Arsenal?

Im happy with our forward three of Cox, Paynter and Corr backed up by Joyce
happy with Brez and Smith - they need to get a decent keeper coach in tho

Id dispense with Aljofree, Nalis, Sturrock, McGovern, Amankwaah, Casal and Allen.
With those 7 off the wage bill we might be able to get some extras in. brings the squad down from 25 to 18 ... with an addition of 3 maybe 4 if we ramp up Macklin to the first team squad - that is an acceptable 22

I understand what you are trying to achieve there Fatbury, but for all the (mostly deserved) stick he has taken since joinging us, McGovern has been one ouf our best players of late.  He does not deserved to be dropped.

Understand what you are saying CT .. but if we are going to play McGovern at all it should be as a central midfielder .. hes no winger .. but I agree he has been better at the end of 2008 and his effort seems to be there ... maybe his confidence has gone

Although I'd like to see Marshall worked on with the coaches and given a run in the reserves to give him a chance, I can't see the justification in including him in the first eleven!  I also can't see how anyone can justify dropping McGovern after his recent efforts.

Dropping McGovern would be stupid before the winter break he was probably our best player.

I also wouldnt play 4-5-1 at home, to Stockport - the time to when battling draws were good enough are long gone. It has to be a win tonight.

Brezovan

Smith
Ifil
Morrison (assuming Aljofree is still injured)
Timlin

JPM
Peacock
Easton
McNamee

Paynter
Cox

Subs; Smith, Kanuyka, Corr, Sturrock, Macklin

fucking go for it!

I've just run round the room cheering, that really is something to celebrate, hope DW knocks that off his "to do" list.

Mexs dads half time report.........

We've had a couple of half chances but they have had 5 or 6, stockport edging it and looking a decent team. No one really standing out but timlin is struggling, macnamee might as well not be fucking playing, hope wilson gives them a kick up the arse and maybe changes it around. Theres only about 40 stockport fans there, however there is not that many swindon either.

Casal's been given a rough deal to be honest. He's had what 3 games, for a new club, in a new country, in a team low on confidence. He obviously has something about him (mclaren wanted him at twente), yet he's just been cast asunder. Hell, against Franchise he wasn't even that bad. Surely he's worth another go

Cox' attitude sucks.  Having a tantrum when Smithy took the pen.  If he cant be a team player he can fuck off, little brat. Took Easton and Timlin to talk to him and didn't celebrate the goal.

We were okay apart from at shooting and defending. Wilson has a job on his hands.

Their number 7- Pilkington was the best player on the pitch by a mile, outstanding today.

Corr injured again seemed sadly inevitable, I think his career's got to winding down now because no other club will take him on with his record. A shame as on his day he's up there with the best strikers at the club.

I said it was make or break - make, just about

Overall the performance was alot better. We looked more solid and worked better as a unit in defence. Ifil successfull passed the ball short, on the floor at least 7 [SEVEN] times**

Kanyuka looked good one minute and like a donkey the next, I swear he's high when he plays. Timlin was awful and getting booked so early on played on his mind. I suppose if you had to point the finger for the goal he would have been at him but they at least had to work for their goal and their number 7 Anthony Pilkington looked pretty decent.

Midfield did alright, nothing expectional, nothing piss poor at least Easton looked a bit more like the Craig Easton of last season.

Striker, Cox touch has gone, better control and he could have had a few. Corr was playing well so it was only a matter of time. As a person I feel sorry for him because he wants to play from an STFC point of he's basically getting paid got dislocating his shoulder!!! In hindsight a huge waste of wages that would be better spent on a player who is fit!!

Stockport were a half decent side and to be honest one of the better ones I've seen this season. So much better that the fucking dross served up by Brighton, Yeovil and Carlisle.

Their goalkeeper made at least 4 top top saves and basically earnt them their point, although axs said he gave away the penalty but I didnt see it at all as I was watching the flight of the ball.

On another day we would have won that comfortable, few positives, few negatives out of that

Brezovan was catching everything, Ifil was passing it, Easton was better, Cox didnt spend any time rolling around on the floor and moaning at the ref. Better movement from throw in. Not stupid fucking awful ghey ass little forwards, backwards, forward irish jig from corners.

If this was two months ago I would have been really happy with that performances and point but we're at the stage where points arent good enough.

I thought/hoped we would have gone for it a little bit more at 1-1, the bench look awful tonight. Smith, Nalis, Pook, Amankwaah and Sturrock. Surprised me because apart from Sturrock there were no other attacking players. I thought Paynter would have at least made the bench today, even more so with Corrs injury record.

How good this draw is depends on what we put on top of it, lose or draw next week and the point doesnt look that good put a win against Huddersfield next to it and it'll be ok

I know in the pub before hand I wasnt really feeling positive but all those cries of pesimism are again completely un-true as DV scores another spot on prediction in the league!

** it was actually 7 [SEVEN] no lie!!!!!

 - Corr may as well quit now
 - Peacock was utter shite again
 - Brez looked shaky on crosses first half, and could possibly have come out for their goal - Timlin was never going to beat Parkinson, given a) he was slower, and b) Parky had a running start on him
 - Cox looks like he has no confidence. Control is lacking, and his decision making is questionable
 - Blair should have scored
 - Kanyuka was beaten all too often and made too many errors

Other than that, it was average.

Cox' attitude sucks.  Having a tantrum when Smithy took the pen.  If he cant be a team player he can fuck off, little brat. Took Easton and Timlin to talk to him and didn't celebrate the goal.

My patience is wearing thin.

Yeah, a striker that wants to score goals. He can fuck right off! It's about time that players walked around with a big phoney smile on their faces. I'd like it if Coxy wore some of those big comedy hands and did some sort of Hawaii five-O celebration when he scored. That'd be shittastic

All in all the game was open with lots of chances but largely low quality.

Didn't see the Cox sulk. Thought he was shit first half much improved second half.

Timlin and Peacock were shit. McNamee started brightly but faded badly. JPM didn't get the ball enough but put in a "good shift". Ifil did OK but Kanyuka is wank. Smith was OK but put another silly cross field pass.

That leaves Corr, who did well. However it's now time to shoot him and send him to the glue factory. Sorry Baz, I'm sure you are gutted but it's time to find something new to do. Perhaps a job in a feather pillow factory or packing bubble wrap.

Their #7 was indeed the best player.

Stockport were a very good side so it is a good point, and I would say that Pilkington is probably the best player that I have never ever heard of before.

Timlin was not good and was scared to tackle after getting yellow carded early on, but, son, that's what happens when you throw yourself into tackles so readily.

Easton was our MOM and it was nice to have him back :)

An average performance at best tonight, I am very supportive of Danny wilson but he got it so wrong tonight Paynter should of started or at the very least been a sub, Sturrocks miss at the end showed what an utter gash player he is.  We need signings asap, definitely another 2 points dropped for sure.

How is that 2 points dropped? We were lucky to be one nil up and despite the odd chance we had they played all round us and we were chasing most of the game. Good point and no way did we deserve or were going to win that.

With the way things have been going a point is a bloody good result.

It was a bt of a mixed bag. There were a few ocasions where we stroked the ball around well. Conversely some of our passing was absolutely shocking. We were happy to watch the ball in all areas of the pitch rather than attack it. Timlin's performance tonight was the worst I've seen from any Town player this season. Positionally he was complete shit hence their goal and his passing was wank. He should have been subbed at half time. Their no 7 gave him the biggest shitting on since I saw MacNamee pre season v Pompey on Crainie I think.
Agree about Easton being our MOM.
I actually thuoght our front 2 were bollox tonight. Cox is very low on confidence. Corr's first and second touches let him down when put thruogh by JPM. The one he skied in the 1st half he should at least have got on target.
Alos, the ref. A few dodgy decisons but overall I think he did well.

I honestly don't feel it was a point gained, thought we had the more clear cut chances and although going forward they looked quite good I felt we got behind them enough to win the game.  Its games like this when we need to shut out teams more and be solid and secure 1-0 wins.

A big improvement on the last couple of months today mainly due to organisation and having some kind of game plan. It's obvious we need a dominating centre back, a play making midfielder and maybe some pace or physical presence up front though.

Positives, Brez generally did ok a few good saves and is starting to catch crosses again, Ifil is starting to do the the simple stuff again and so is looking decent again, Easton had his best game of the season, McGovern is starting to win me round and that last ditch challenge he did was brilliant and stopped a certain goal.

Negatives well I think time is sadly up for Corr we can't afford to waste wages on him, Cox desperately needs a goal, Timlin had a mare and worst of all was Kanyuka who is an utter waste of space and I'd be happy never to see him play again he's just an utter donkey. Fucked up on the half way line for their goal then got himself booked trying to claim to the ref he was fouled. He let them in time and time again with his stupid errors.

I felt abit sorry for Timlin to be honest as not only did he have to cover for McNamee's lack of defensive ability he also had to worry about what mistake Kanyuka would make next.

I'll take the point and with a few new players we're capable of staying up.

Okish game. We looked more confident and put quite a few passes together but no finishing product. Corr surly has to be done now. I think almost everyone knew Corr had dislocated his shoulder when he went down. Its clearly an injury he is going to keep getting and is never going to be able to have a full career etc. He will always dislcate his shoulder.

Thought Smith was ok as was Macca, lets step overs and just worked his bollocks off., Peacock and Timlin were pants,

Sturrock is one of our most under rated players I think, have done for a while.
There keeper was fantastic!

Just got back! thought it was a bit of a mixed bag. One thing I can say is its probably the least entertaining town side i have seen in a long time which I could stomach if we were winning, but we are not! Defence is looking very shakey, too much ball watchng/slipping over/not communicating. Midfield looked very lightweight although at least were passing a little better. Cox looked frustrated and a little off the pace.
All in all DW has a hell of a lot of work to do and im starting to believe that maybe the problem is the playing staff rather then the coaching/management staff!

Did I go to a different game?

I thought that was one of their best performances at home this season, in the top 4 at least. I think everyone is forgetting just how bad they've played in other games. Passes were generally reaching their target, there was good movement, some nice moves, plenty of chances, the keeper was distributing the ball well and so on.

Stockport are 7th in the league and we matched them, more than matched them actually as we should have won it and I'm sure they'll be happy with a point. Still plenty of room for improvement, but it was a lot better on the whole.

For me a draw at home can't be a point gained, not on most occasions anyway.  Disappointed, again, leaving the cg last night.  The match quality (from our point of view) was limited, on too many occasions a few minutes of okay football was ruined by awful individual mistakes.

What was going on with the subsititute selection? Awful, Paynter should have been on the bench at least did no one tell DW that Barry's shoulder is made of glass?  How the hell did LP stay on the pitch for the full 90.  Did he just have the last two weeks off?  After two weeks of trainin fitness should have been spot on, Peacock looked completely out of sorts.  If that's the effect on a mid season break hope the FL never implement it!!

Oh and there number 7 was ace, surprised we didn't do anything to stop his effectiveness, cos he run the show for them.

Don't get me wrong there were signs of improvement but not quite as much as I'd hoped for, still looked like a MM/DB team to me.  Saturday's result will be interesting to see on Saturday.

                    Swindon Town      Stockport County
Shots (on Goal)    10(5)    12(5)
Fouls            11        11
Corner Kicks      9        9
Offsides              0        2
Time of Possession 48%    52%
Yellow Cards      1            1
Red Cards            0        0
Saves                  7            5

The stats seem to bear out what I thought at the game, pretty evenly matched. Despite the individual errors, we easily matched Stockport and could have got all 3 points, although a draw was a fair result.

Pilkington was different class.

A lot of our players aren't as good as I thought they were though and DW needs to get in a few replacements if we want to avoid a relegation battle for the rest of the season.

But at least it looked like they knew the system we were playing and, overall, it was a more disciplined performance.

Defensively worse than ever .. the back four and keeper were lucky not to concede 4 or 5 .. luck was actually on our side along with woeful Stockport finishing

Atack wise we looked a bit sharper at times .. there was no long aimless ball forward - it was all ball to feet but half the players didnt seem to cope with this style.

Lucky to get a draw .. but signs of improvement overall

I suppose Dannyboy was using the old kidology ploy after the game by saying he was pleased with the performace. I must have been at a different game!
Stockport should have sewn it up by half time as we gave them so much space and time all over the pitch.
Had it not been for a rush of blood from the goalkeeper we would never have scored.
As for his "brilliant" saves near the end I would say it was more a case of piss poor shooting from our strikeforce than anything else. Blairs shot was pathetic.
Our defence it seems will never improve.
I have never rated Timlin as a midfield player but thought he had found his niche at left back. His last two matches there has fucked that theory. Get shot of him ASAP along with sicknote (BC) and most of the other light weights.
Time to get the cheque book Mr Fitton as soon it will be too late.
It pains me to say it but I thought Pook looked good when he came on (or was it just that the rest were so bad).

Disappointed again but a better display than the Brighton fuck up.
We seemed to play better when we passed the ball simple but we only seemed to do this in small patchs and the rest of the time we starting pinging long balls up and across the pitch which fell constantly to Stockport players.
Heres my view for its cheapness:
JP was my best player.
Cox seemed to be trying to hard at times and the ball constantly stuck under his feet.
Brez improved but punched a bit too often...but im being picky.
Ifil...very good...just did the simple thing.
Smith...a player who was being bombed out is our most consistent performer...lucky with the pen but who cares..
Corr....what can i say...i doubt very much we will see him ever play in a town shirt again.
Kanyukkkkkk.....fucked up for the goal.
McNamee.....Seems to be a luxtury player who drifted out of the game.....im sorry to say he is not a player we needed when we rolled our sleeves up at the end and maybe for the long hard battle ahead.
Easton was much improved.
Peacock...did he play?
Timlin...good player but too much to do and struggled.
We need a combative midfielder and a decent defender before the window slams shut...if we get these i believe we will scrape enough to stay up as some of the teams below us are a bit worse.
In a relegation scrap we need to do just that and we need players who can battle.
Billy should be welcomed back as far as im concerned....

Thought there was a mild improvement to the midfield, but the defence was even worse than usual due to terrible individual performances from Timlin and Kanyuka. Peacock was anonymous also.

Dont agree at all that it was 2 points lost, we may have taken the lead and had a glorious chance to win it in the last minute, but I thought Stockport were the better side and could easily have scored 3-4 if they had been more clinical.

We need new players danny. quickly

Brez - 7 -  flapped at a cross early on but did ok after that.
J Smith - 5-  was alright but has been better
Timlin - 3 -  Dire game. terrible passing and positioning. didnt seem to know what he was doing. perhaps not the solution to left back that we thought he was
Kanyuka - 2 -   My god he was shit.  let the ball go past him numerous times, has no influence over the direction of the ball when he heads it, and ball watched constantly.
Ifil - 6 -  Looked like Rio Ferdinand next to Kanyuka
McGovern - 6  - Worked hard, put a few decent balls in
Easton - 6 - His best performance for a while
Peacock - 4 - Anonymous
Macca. - 4 -  saw more of the ball than usual, and looked like he had been told to roam a bit and get involved. no end product though.
Cox - 6 - still not at his best, but won us a pen and did very well to set up sturrocks chance. says a lot when hes a bit out of sorts but still looks one of our best players.
Corr - 6 - I'm not going to mark him badly on his final professional appearance. did ok but nothing more really

I think we need to put this performance into context. Stockport are a very good side, especially away from home, and judging by our leage position, we're not. The key to our survival is to beat the teams around us, that's how Wigan have got to where they are. If we can take points off the top sides then that's a bonus, so I see this as a good draw. Wilson is not going to be able to change things over night and we do need new players, wilson will have learned much more from last night than he will have in two weeks of training.

Onwards and upwards.

The fact of the matter is we're in a relegation battle, which means over the course of the season we've not been very good. We shouldn't be expecting to beat teams like stockport, not at the moment. Maybe next season, if we can stay up. A point against them is a point gained, good for confidence, nothing more.

I doubt we'll get much out of Huddersfield or Oldham, but we have to beat Walsall, and it's those games that will decide whether we stay up or not, not those against teams at the other end. It's the key games where we should judge Wilson. Our team isn't good enough to beat the best sides and Wilson, no matter how good he is, can't polish a turd.

So there were still problems last night, but we also created chances, Ifil played really well... there were positives that have been missing in recent weeks.

If Wilson can add one or two players, and we all know where we need to strengthen, then I think we'll be ok.

Saw the double save from the stockport keeper. the 2nd one was the best, reminded me of Thomas Kuszczak double dave a couple of years ago at wigan. Sturrock should off buried it.

I usually stick up for Peacock but he wasnt good yesterday, however what other options did we have Pook or Nalis.

As poor as Peacock was, would you rather have had Pook or Nalis in there, dont think so!!

Am I allowed to say we would have been better off with Aljofree at the back than Kanyuka?

Even I would agree with that but then to be honest I think last night we'd have been better with Ifil on his own rather than having to guess what Kanyuka might do next

Maybe even Morrison to.

I know Aljofree is injured and I know his commitment and actions are questionable but I still think himself and Ifil are our best options at CB.

Agree. I know some people dont rate him and his form was poor earlier in the season, but prior to the injury Aljofree's form had picked up.

I dont think hes brilliant or anything, but him and Ifil when fit and in reasonable form are the best centre back pairing we have.  We really really need and experienced CB with leadership qualities NOW

Well Jamie Vincent is back in training but I dont suppose he is anywhere close to being match fit.

He didnt play on Monday did he?

Its going to take Vincent ages to get back to his best.  When was his last game? must be 8.5 / 9 months ago?

What's wrong with playing Smith/Amankwaah at lb instead of Timlin?

Portsmouth pre-season so late July?

What's wrong with playing Smith/Amankwaah at lb instead of Timlin?

Amankwaah!

Seriously, Wilson must had said to him before he went on - just do Timlins job, Amankwaah then took this to mean give the ball away all the time.

Of course you could always question why not play Kennedy or Casal at left back instead of Timlin but up untill the last two games Timlin has done a good job there.

Its the Swindon way at the moment, players hit forms for a few weeks then turns to sit. Cox, McNamee & Pook have all done it so far!

I forgot he managed a few games pre season.  Even so, You'd expect him to need 3/4 reserve games to get up to speed again.

As for a LB now, I've no problem with playing Kennedy, he's done ok so far.

Casal is shite. I cant believe we paid money for him. I know its a phrase that gets used lightly at times but I genuinley believe that he does not look like a professional footballer. He seemed to have no idea how to play at left back at all earlier in the season.
