Title: holiday destinations Post by: juddie on Thursday, August 28, 2008, 21:39:43 so me and the missus were looking to go to vietnam and cambodia next year, but we're thinking we might try and do a nice holiday, only not quite as far (and expensive) and do our garden up as well. Living the dream, you see!
However, I hate most european destinations - I like to see stuff as well as sit on the beach - so where could we go for a week to 10 days for about 500 sheets that ain't europe? Apologies for starting another holiday thread... Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: Sippo on Thursday, August 28, 2008, 21:41:39 Croatia?

Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, August 28, 2008, 21:47:45 I couldn't really understand why Europe was excluded anyway.

You can go to North Africa on the cheap these days. Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: THE FLASH on Friday, August 29, 2008, 07:41:48 Istanbul - but be careful not to wander over the river into the European side!

Woohoo that backs onto my back garden :) Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: janaage on Friday, August 29, 2008, 08:56:45 Juddie, do Slovenia, Europe's hidden treasure. Start of in Lake Bled, hire a rowing boat and row to the 13th century church in the middle of the lake, very romantic (if not a little tiring). Hire some bikes have a lovely look around a beautiful place, then pop down to Ljubljana for a few days, nice city, wonderful castle, then head down south to the coastal resorts of Portoroz/Piran/Izola for some sun. Take the train between destinations, flipping lovely country. You can also get a high speed boat across to Italy or Croatia for a day or two. Loved the 9 days I spent in Slovenia, couldn't recommend it enough, not pricey at all either.
Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: Reg Smeeton on Friday, August 29, 2008, 09:37:22 Istanbul - but be careful not to wander over the river into the European side! Turkey sounds like a good bet especially if a bit adventurous, meaning want to do a bit of proper travel....an unknown gem is the Kackar Daglari mountain range....Mt Kackar is about 4000m....the landscape is alpine...on a good day from the top you should be able to hear teh Russian guns in South Ossetia. The Turks of course want to enter the EU, so infrastructure is improving, but it's still not Europe...nevertheless welcoming strangers is traditional...probably a good time to go. Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: janaage on Friday, August 29, 2008, 10:58:43 I was reading the other day about the Aussie's "tired old Europe" view. It's a shame they feel that way as I personally think Europe is a great continent with so much to do and see. The way you can be in France and travel just an hour in a number of directions and then be in a place with a completely different culture amazes me. When I did some European travelling in the summer of 97 it really did make me think what a wonderful place Europe is.
Having said that I do find that I'm in awe of so many places I visit, whether it be Central America, Asia, New York, Australia, I think this planet's class!! Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Friday, August 29, 2008, 11:02:54 If thats the Aussies view they can take there shitty pubs back with them then
Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: THE FLASH on Friday, August 29, 2008, 11:27:13 Aussies are like the Irish........tell you how wonderful their country is.......but never actually live there!!
Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Friday, August 29, 2008, 11:28:24 Whoah flash do not compare the Irish and the Aussies
Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: janaage on Friday, August 29, 2008, 11:41:20 The Aussies I've met aren't like that, they come over here on a British passport, work like hell for a couple of years then go back to Australia and get a lovely house built, paid for by earning British pounds. Makes sense to me. I can't wait to go back to Australia flippin great place.
Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: THE FLASH on Friday, August 29, 2008, 11:48:32 Australia and Ireland are indeed great countries......just dont bang on about how wonderful they are when you are living in someone elses!!
When i travel abroad with work i enjoy all the culture and stuff but i dont ram England down peoples necks! Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: janaage on Friday, August 29, 2008, 11:50:27 To be honest flash if you did I think you'd get laughed out the country. I honestly can't say that Britain is that great these days. This island is sinking imo.

Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: janaage on Friday, August 29, 2008, 11:53:38 ...if you live in certain parts of Norfolk then yes. ;-)
Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: THE FLASH on Friday, August 29, 2008, 11:54:31 Cant argue..........i would miss the footy and family but not much else.....if it wasnt for my daughter i would of probably gone by now.......my only regret is not travelling more when i was younger.
Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: dell boy on Friday, August 29, 2008, 11:55:07 ...if you live in certain parts of Norfolk then yes. ;-) Bit a flooding in the last 12 months, you don't need to be in Norfolk!! This country is now a joke, wish I moved out when I had the chance and everything was in place to do so. Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: janaage on Friday, August 29, 2008, 11:56:53 I'm still working on my Mrs, I really do want to leave the country at some stage, some of the events that go on here really annoy me, especially politically. I will miss absolutely loads of things about this nation but I think the standard of life would be greater elsewhere.
Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: thepeoplesgame on Friday, August 29, 2008, 13:49:05 Fucking hell, people. This country ain't perfect, but seriously, if you think it's that bad it's pretty easy to go somewhere else these days. Or you could even try to take an active role in improving the aspects of British life you deem to be so awful.
(Obviously we're stuck with the weather, I don't think there's anything anyone can do about that.) And when you consider family, it isn't that easy, especially when you have to consider your other half's family. Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: thepeoplesgame on Friday, August 29, 2008, 14:05:39 Yes, I know, that's why I said I'd like to move abroad at some time in the near future. Obviously I can't relate to your or anyone else's individual circumstances. Always fancied living in Moscow myself, but cycling there would be terrifying and I couldn't give up cycling. Plus, my life is here, which is why I'm happy to stay in a country that really isn't that bad. Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: THE FLASH on Friday, August 29, 2008, 14:13:02 Moscow is expensive and a huge rich/poor divide..........
Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: thepeoplesgame on Friday, August 29, 2008, 14:18:34 Moscow is expensive and a huge rich/poor divide.......... I know. So is Bath. Nowhere is perfect, and I'm quite contented where I am. Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: Phil_S on Friday, August 29, 2008, 14:33:02 You might be able to get a good deal for Kenya. The beaches are superb, coral reefs & all. However if you go to Kenya you really have to do a 2/3 day Safari which would add to the cost, but is superb.

Hmmmm Kenya is a funny one and IMO needs to be done properly ie spending a bit on a decent safari with good quality accommodation as the last thing you want after a long day animal watching in the heat is a stuffy room with no air con! Kenya however is awesome and the best holiday I have ever had. Just depends how much you want to spend really. Somak are a pretty good company to use. Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: Rich Pullen on Friday, August 29, 2008, 17:26:51 I fancy living abroad one day for a few years (nothing to do with England: I just think it would be an exciting change of pace) - the missus has got a useful Science related degree which opens a suprising amount of doors.
I rarely go on holiday abroad though... Boo. Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: pumbaa on Friday, August 29, 2008, 19:29:01 As most know, I've just returned to Blighty from spending 3 years living in the USA. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed every second of my time overseas, made some extremely good friend (who my wife and I consider as family, and we are to them) and would return in a heartbeat.
Apart from family and friends here, and of course STFC, there is nothing else about this country I would miss frankly. Sad I know, but true. And in response to the original post, Tunisia or Morocco? Title: Re: holiday destinations Post by: Luci on Friday, August 29, 2008, 22:13:54 Ohhhh Im going to Morocco in a couple of weeks, Ill feed back!
