I'm a Canon fan, but anything made by Nikon, Fuji, Sony or Panasonic should be top notch quality wise.

I found the Panasonic Lumix fitted the bill perfectly. The one I got had 5 mp, 7 x optical, but has now been superceeded by a more mega pixels model.
