Title: Queens Park Rangers v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Monday, August 26, 2013, 23:00:03
The Opponent:   Queens Park Rangers

I really want to go to this one, old ‘Arry could put out a team that we are capable of competing with (especially with him being an ex-Spurs manager), although he is just as likely to put out a team that may well wipe the floor with us. Either way, I want to be there, just in case it turns into one of those special nights. The only thing that is stopping me is a huge pile of garden waste in Cirencester booked in for around 4pm, but the chances of getting that shifted in time to get away and join the exodus along the M4 are somewhat slimmer than a vegetarians fart.

After passing our way passed Turkey in round 1 of The COC, we were handed an away tie with QPR, some seeing it as a dreadful draw, others as a great draw and the rest not that fussed either way.  I have always enjoyed Loftus Road, my first visit was with my Manchester City supporting sister back in the 80’s and I can vaguely remember thinking at the time that it was a proper football stadium, even though it had a plastic pitch. It was claimed that then manager Terry Venables would let opposition teams train on the pitch when it was dry, and then deliberately dampen the pitch so that the ball played differently to what they expected at kick off. I never had Venables down as dodgy!

QPR hold the title of having had the most home grounds in football league history and have had a somewhat nomadic existence, having played in 16 different locations throughout northwest London since their formation. The several grounds before 1886 are unknown but were probably in the Queens Park area. QPR have a fantastic selection of famous supporters, especially in the musical world, including names such as Druggie waster Pete Doherty, Glen Matlock, Depeche Modes Alan Wilder, Easyjet boss Stellios with the long surname, and my personal favourite, Eddie Hitler, from the BBC sitcom, Bottom.

They’ve served for both of us -  Paul Hart, Peter Eastoe, Giles Coke, Eric Sabin, Ossie Ardiles, David Kerslake, Leon Clarke, Fraser Digby, Don Rogers and Charlie Austin.

Where the opposition gather –

http://www.wearetherangersboys.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?11-QPR-FANS&s=ea55a677aa4c1c888debbe24e5059852

Last 6 – LLWDWW

The Odds –  QPR 4/7   Draw   14/5   Swindon 5/1. Its been a while since we have had odds of 5/1, worth a punt? Our lowest priced first goalscorer is Nile Ranger, generally at 10/1. Ahead of him for QPR is Bobby Zamora, Andy Johnson, Shaun Wright Phillips, Mo Shariff, Junior Hoillet, and of course, Charlie Austin, as short as 11/4 in some outlets. Perhaps its worth making a few quid out of the inevitable?

The Son Says –  “As they are quite a good team” he first opted for 1-1, then ended up at 2-2. Town to win on penalties though.

The Prediction – Tough one this. QPR are full of Premier League players, seasoned internationals and are managed by one of the highest rated coaches in the business. On this basis we will thrash them 1-0. Goal scored by Massimo Luongo, 7’888 in attendance with 878 making the journey to Shepherds Bush.

And Finally –  In the last 5 years QPR have had no less than 10 different managers, the most successful being the longest serving manager in that time, Neil Warnock, who managed to win 33 of his 81 games in charge. Talk about consistency!

Top write up as always SR.

Think we'll play well, drawing compliments from whoever's watching our game on SSN and from 'Arry, but ultimately lose, 2-0.

Looking forward to it though and hopefully be a good night for our 1,642 travelling fans.

A heavy defeat today I am afraid probably 3-0.

Hopefully we can take about 1,800 to 2,000 there to cheer us on though.

We will get dicked 4 0 if they take it seriously.

We have a very outside chance if they don't.

This squad isn't yet at the level of last year's Stoke conquerors. And I can't see ranger playing two 90 minute in a few days so I don't think we'll have anything to hurt them with.

I think, as always, we'll up our game against higher opposition and will score first. Come full time it will be 2-1 though.

Looking forward to my first visit to Loftus Road, just hope we make some noise as I've heard it's become a bit of a library there.

Really looking forward to this one, first visit to Loftus Road. I just hope our fans don't sit in silence for 90 minutes.

I can see us struggling tonight, reckon we could see a few goals go in unless they rest a lot of their first team.

I have two spaces.

Pick up Calne - Bassett - Town - M4 Corridor.

Message me if you need a lift.

Yeah I've got two spaces at present if anyone is desperately stuck, leaving from North Swindon via Lydiard Millicent. Don't mind travelling a bit out to get people if they are struggling.

I fear a spanking tonight. Although on the other hand, perhaps playing against better opposition might spur us on.

4-0 or 1-1.

We'll probably get a bit more space against a Championship side, might suit us a bit more. I think we'll go down fighting 3-1.

Plymouth. Lee Johnson scored from the half-way line because Luke McCormick expected him to kick it towards the corner and left the goal open.

Just on train back.

That was fucking brilliant. Very happy I was so far off with my prediction. First half we shaded it. Great goal, Harley's pass in the build up was exquisite. Ranger played well, he will be brilliant this season.

Defended brilliantly in the second half, Fods was on fire, Ward was a rock and Bryne even looked good at LB. Great goal from Pritchard to finish if off.

Decent atmosphere in the second half and great support in terms of numbers. A big premiership side away would be nice in the next round.

Just got back good result from the lads,
 good turnout from Swindon Supporters
Team played well
As for the next round home tie  personally i do not want it to be Sunderland as then it will be all about PDC

Very good result and performance tonight.

QPR were about as threatening as a plastic spoon first half, but put us under under a lot of pressure in the second. We definitely rode our luck, but edged the game on desire and commitment (of which QPR looked totally bereft), and probably played the better football overall.

Definitely a team performance where everyone played their part, though I'd pick out Pritchard, who ran himself into the ground for 90 minutes and still somehow had the legs to beat a couple of players for his goal at the end, and Ranger, who launched himself at everything and who's hold up play had everything Williams' does not, as the standout players.

As for Cooper. Got everything right tonight, in terms of tactics and substitutions at the right times. I think tonight could be the night he finally wins over the majority of the support.

I seriously hope so, it's frustrating and embarrassing to have such a divide in terms of our supporters..

1st game I've seen this season and if that's that standard then we don't have much to be negative about. Ranger looks exactly the right type to play the lone striker role, I can't see there being many better than him in league 1. Pritchard's goal was quality. QPR had a good side out tonight, hopefully that result will give us a boost in the league now.

Just back to the South Coast after a day in Laaaaaandannn with the family, capped off with a visit to Loftus Road.

Very good performance, glad we were strong back even when faced with the likes of Zamora, Wright-Phillps, Johnson and Cocaine Charlie whic,h lets face, it is a good attacking force. Thought Pritchard was MOM, but everyone performed.

But...............how bad are our balls into the box from dead balls ??? Shocking

And...............Wes really needs to turn down the power meter on his clearances (reminded me of Ross Mclaren tonight)

edit : Charlie's offside goal was the icing on the cake.

Buzzing off that, great win for us and we played pretty well! QPR came on very strongly once Ranger went off, but fair play to the lads the 2nd goal had shades of Brentford away! Looking forward to the draw, personally would like Sunderland but an away day at Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Man Utd or City would do  :D

Great night.  Shaded the first half and deserved to be 1 up.  Ranger won everything in the air, he is like Zebedee.  Thought QPR got away with a lot of challenges, jumping in, leading to Smith getting injured.  The Ref was a homer, except for he didn't seem to like Charlie.

Have to say I thought the abuse of Charlie was OTT.  I know he has moved on and it is the norm, but after the goals he scored for us, and being a relatively local lad, I couldn't hand out the shit that was handed out tonight.  Would we treat Nathan Thompson the same if he moved on under the same circumstances?

To go against the majority, I thought Pritchard was poor, very lightweight and ineffective.  As much as his goal was a great relief, I can't say I agree with the quality of it, more down to perseverance than skill.  I was crying out for Storey to replace him instead of Ranger, we might as well have not had a striker on the pitch after Ranger went off, Storey is not able to play up front on his own and was lazy in tracking back, which at the time is what we needed.

Still, great result, and good to be there.  Thought Wes, Ward, Nathan and Ranger played well, and Luongo ran himself into the ground.

Thought the fans were good, except for the young knobs after that thought it would be clever to start singing on a full train whilst pounding on the roof. And then the four of them goading the one Arsenal fan on the train with our Arsenal Cup Final song.  Stick to the Fanta boys...

Well that wasn't bad. Played better football than a strong QPR side boasting internationals for at least an hour.

Did drop deeper and came under pressure once Ranger came off, but he looked fucked and hardly a shock he couldn't play 180 minutes in 4 days yet.

All in all pleasing to see quality, work rate and the right tactical and personnel decisions being made. What more can you ask for really?

Obviously won't be like this every week but should give them confidence, and it's nice to know how good we can be when it clicks.

Extremely pleased that my usual trick of totally avoiding away game commentary worked! (had Soccer Saturday on for Shrews game, maybe I'd best give that up too...?)

Think I'd like a similar level opponent but at home in the next round - reasonably exciting but not totally unrealistic in terms of winning it...

May have been where you were, but all I heard was "Charlie, Charlie what's the score?" (and once slightly amended to "Charlie, where do you score?" :) ) which seemed fairly reasonable/tame to me tbh. If there was more than that then I'd agree, no need for it. Always find it a bit embarrassing when we do that tbh, it's like the jilted ex who can't move on, just makes you look petty.

Anyway, I like playing Charlie in the 2nd round of the League Cup - pretty much a bye!

Just watched the highlights on STFC player.  The bbc text feed last night said that QPR had a clear penalty turned down.  Yep, apart from the fact that he clearly took the ball.

Its all very promising at the moment apart from the lack of depth to our squad.  An injury to central defence or striker and we're a bit fucked.  Hope this gets sorted.

Terrible ball from Onouha, Pritchard ran at the defence, cut inside, shot with his left foot. Keeper got a hand to it, couldn't stop it going into the net.

Saw the goals on SSN this morning, peach of a cross for the first and a nice bundled finish by NR.

Ranger looks like he is a bit of a beast. He was winning a lot against a very strong back line... I'm not sure he'll score a lot but he could be a real asset for us as he continues to get fit.

Hall equally was superb I thought. Consider the calibre of player he was up against he had an excellent game and showed the potential he has, I really feel the longer the season goes on the better he will get.

Enoughs been said about the game already, but how fucking funny was it after the disallowed goal? It took most of them an age to realise it didn't count and they were doing the gay little goal dance along to the goal music and everything. Hilarious! Also didn't understand why Mason was shown a yellow for his first offence, yet some of them (Diakite in particular) were getting away with multiple fouls. The ref did well for the dive though, it was awful and I think a lot of refs would have been conned.

TBF I don't think anyone has said that mid table will be a superb season, several like myself have said that they will be fairly happy with mid table.

If we can do better than brilliant, which we may well do. If they can all have a desire to play for each other and for the club then thats half the battle. With teamwork and team bonding then anything can happen as was proved to a certain point by Di Canio, some managers get the best out of the players they have lets hope Cooper can do that too.

As the ball is crossed in from the right and the QPR player goes up to head it, Austin is clearly in advance of him, on his own, between him and the goal line.

I am basing this on what I saw at the match not on video, I haven't watched the highlights yet.  I still stick by it, although poor was probably not the right word.  Nobody was poor.  But, from where I was sat, watching live, Pritchard looked very lightweight.  I didn't even see who put the cross in for Ranger, I was behind the opposite goal.  I may have a different view after watching the video.

At least I am willing to give an opinion that differs.  My opinions aren't based on a dodgey football rumours website.

But, from where I was sat, watching live, Pritchard looked very lightweight.

He's a 5ft 7 attacking winger, what do you expect?

In terms of how he used what he has physically, he couldn't have done much more. He chased down every ball for 90 minutes when everyone else looked knackered and didn't shirk getting stuck in on the challenge, all aside from being architect of the two town goals.

Said during the game that was by far the hardest working performance I'd seen from Pritchard. Almost seemed like he had a point to prove. Maybe felt held back when coming through the ranks at Spurs under Redknapp?

Good shout, the lad ran himself into the ground, he was knackered by the end, making his digging deep to find that little turn of speed to latch onto the sideways pass and carve through their defence all the more impressive.
