Title: Not Going To Wembley Thread
Post by: Gerinthere on Friday, May 15, 2015, 22:05:25
Unfortunately, due to personal commitments I can't make it to Wembley  but will be in Swindon. So, for all those in the same predicament, where is everybody drinking. Don't fancy being Billy no mates watching in a pub on my own but would certainly go into town to watch in a pub if there was going to be a decent crowd of us. Get the atmosphere going and all that.

What kind of planning is that? Having your stag do on play off final weekend?

Are you getting married on the first day of the new season (Reading away)?

Are you marrying a man or a woman?

I've just bought a house, so won't be going sadly. At the moment I am managing to convince myself that this is ok by thinking about how fucking shit and expensive it was the last two times.

(So naturally this time it won't be shit!)

I am off to Nerja in Spain for the week so miss Wembley.  However due to the father in law being in hospital at the moment there is a chance that we might not go on holiday.  So I got myself a wembley ticket anyway just in case.

Come Thursday I could well be selling my wembley ticket for a bargain price..... and I have already decided what bar to watch the match in.

I would be interested, GIT (unfortunate abbreviation really).

I'm not going out of principle, the FA can fuck off, I'm not getting ripped off again to fund their wanky no atmosphere stadium. Whoever finishes third in the league should go up auto as far as I am concerned.

However, that's not how it is, so if we win I get to enjoy Championship football next season, if we lose then I have avoided what feels like eternal Wembley disappointment (yeah, went the last two times and hated it) and dodged a bullet. Sounds good to me :-)

Will watch it in the pub though. Whereabouts are you, GIT? I'm in West Swindon.

Everyone keeps blaming the FA for the ticket prices, think it's the FL you should be blaming.

Pretty certain it's just a facility fee that is paid to Wembley, with ticket prices being set by the FL.

You only have to look at the Conference playoff ticket prices to see they can be set a lot lower.

Also, don't forget that 50% of the profit from the final is split between the finalists.

Usually go in the Sir Dan before kickoff on matchdays with The Flash, Jutty and Victor Mildew

I've decided not to go. I found the Wembley experience last 2 times to be rubbish. If trains were running I would probably have gone but as they aren't I just can't be arsed with it. I hope we win and the atmosphere is great but I ain't bothered that I'm not going in the slightest.

I have my boy for a sleepover. He's excited to watch it on the box, but I feel he's too young (four) given the late kick off, to go.

That and I get married in 11 months so most of my money is being ploughed into that.

I'm not going. I'm still a bit ill at ease with the decision, but it's getting too late to change my mind now.

It's my old man's birthday and he basically feels the same as Arriba so we're having a big BBQ and loads of beers which should be a good day. I vowed after the absolute sack of shite we served up against Chesterfield that I'd give it a miss and I'm sticking to it.

Plus blowing 3 grand on holiday over the last 2 weeks didn't help.

Don't be surprised if I'm scrounging for a ticket on Friday...

I am not going because...

a) I live in the NW so to get down by train would involve an overnight stay!
b) In relation to the above I would be traveling down with a train load of Preston fans!
c) We without fail play shit whenever I attend games, don't think I have seen us win for 5 games!

I think you are right to a point. Take the stadium for instance. There is certainly nothing magic about the place and it's lost any that it did have. The atmosphere in there is crap. At the old Wembley you didn't have the best of views but the new stadium has not improved on that at all. At least the old ground had something about it.

Agree for the main, but the views are better at the new one, if a little far away when in the top tier, best view at the old one was in the corporate ring above the seats, the rest wasn't great anywhere.

I'm not a fan of the tiered design of the new Wembley. The old one was badly dilapidated when I went there in 1999, and had to be demolished. There was no reason though they couldn't have kept the new wembley along the same lines of the old, and you certainly wouldn't of had the steep views that you have now.

I don't dislike the tiered set up there.. I've purchased my NFL tickets for block 501 for the simple fact that the view is good. But then, going to an NFL match is different to that of football, I think.

Of course there are lots of reasons for not going, but for those saying it's because they don't like Wembley or we've lost there twice, well for me that's a bit meek.

We just don't know when we'll get the chance again.

It's five years since our last 'one game' shot at the Championship.  Before that, what, fourteen years?  These opportunities are precious: who wants to regret not being there?

Yes what a buffoon he is. Fancy sitting through an entire season of Div 1 football then deciding to actually attend the one game that could see his beloved team ending up in the Championship! Idiot! Doesn't he realise that he could build real lifetime memories to treasure for evermore by instead spending his money on a few meals out at some of the nation's excellent establishments of quality dining? Will not be going....off to Wentworth to watch the golf
Missed a lot of matches this season and just can't get into it like I used to
Really do think it is an age thing
That said I think Cooper and Co deserve a lot of credit for what they have achieved
Something still missing for me...what it is I don't know
Home matches I have attended have been very flat crowd wise.
Anyhow hope the people who go have a great day...and we get the result

lettuce. Which is where I watched the second leg of the Brentford play-off game. Although I had to ask them to turn it over from the snooker!

I think as you come out of the Falcon heading up Lavender Hill towards Wandsworth there is a party shop where you can almost certainly buy a load of streamers.

Hi all...hope everyone is keeping well.

All the best to you all.
Thanks Leefer a great post & it's a shame that it appears there's more & more of the older supporting brigade feeling this way, I for one will be there with my son whose been to more games than me this season so hopefully us going will keep his enthusiasm & support for the club going. All the best to you & hopefully you will make it to CG next season.

Don't be silly - course it didn't

Did I really call someone a whore? Think I need to revisit that thread!

Yes you did and you PM'd her and apologised - sorry for blowing your cool on the TEF but I thought you were out of order (and still do)...I objected to the whore bit...not the plastic

That thread is brilliant. Anyone know if they are still together?

Yes we are and she is still a customer of the Franchise.  TBH I don't post on here because of that day and also because the fun has left the TEF...those early years were edgy and sometimes the funniest thing I'd ever read about my team...I lurk now because I've nothing to add to what is said these days and I've fallen out of love with footie in general...

Well the good news is that some friends and I have had to change venue of drinking establishment because the kick-off times are rather late out here, meaning our normal venue will be closed shortly after kick-off.

This is good news because it means a change from the venue in which we witnessed the last 2 Wembley outings. It's an omen I tell thee.

Great post Lee, sums up a lot of my feelings, apart from the missed a lot of matches!!  I only missed one home game - and you can all guess which one that was!!  Couldn't get out of it I am afraid but son was texting me during the game - think the vicar did a double take when I let out a little whoop when a player was sent off in the second minute!!  Sometimes it has been a bit of a struggle on a cold wet night to get out of my chair to go to footy but I've done it!!  Although we do play some lovely attacking footy the tippy-tappy from the back has pissed a lot of people off - the no atmosphere bit is totally true anyway!!  You look at the Town End - where the real noisy support is - at 2-45 and it is usually almost empty, in my days - many moons ago - in the TE the place would be rocking from 2-30 onwards, that built the atmosphere around the ground!  I was one of those who said "NON" to Wembley, hate the new Wembley and our well-documented experiences there really put me off going this time, however with one arm up my back I was persuaded I was going again this time!!  And the good news is the tickets arrived today!!

A truly beautiful island but no idea where you'll be able to watch the match.

You could, like Odysseus from neighbouring Ithaca, leave your wife in situ and set sail on a brave mission to find and destroy PNE Thor, perhaps heading for the much livelier island of Zante to the south and hope that your return journey is a little easier than Odysseus's to his (20 year) long suffering wife, Penny.

Alternatively, you may have to settle for wandering down to the airport on the Tuesday and see if they have a copy of the Daily Express or something and ferret through the paper hunting for the score.

the no atmosphere bit is totally true anyway!!  You look at the Town End - where the real noisy support is - at 2-45 and it is usually almost empty, in my days - many moons ago - in the TE the place would be rocking from 2-30 onwards, that built the atmosphere around the ground!

It has to be put down mostly to the fact that - a couple of fourth-division promotions aside - we just haven't done anything for years. So close on several occasions, but never quite there. There's a generation of Town fans (or potential Town fans) who haven't experienced anything like the successes of past days. Add to this inflated ticket prices, as well as the modern ubiquity of the Premier League and its foreign counterparts on TV, and it's little wonder people have become disinterested.

Let's just hope Sunday is the start of a revival...

According to the slightly more reliable Wembley twitter feed, they are in no risk whatsoever. Even the Adver managed to get this right, that's how shite the Mail is:
"Despite the incident, this weekend's play-off finals will not be affected, Wembley Stadium tweeting this morning that all three play-off finals would go ahead."

I'm not going out of principle, the FA can fuck off, I'm not getting ripped off again to fund their wanky no atmosphere stadium. Whoever finishes third in the league should go up auto as far as I am concerned.

Vindicated. Yes, before you all pour scorn on me about being a weak supporter, I have been to all the matches I could manage this season. It wouldn't have made any difference whatsoever if I had been there to cheer and shout for my team. Preston were ten points clear of us for a reason.

Quote
However, that's not how it is, so if we win I get to enjoy Championship football next season, if we lose then I have avoided what feels like eternal Wembley disappointment (yeah, went the last two times and hated it) and dodged a bullet. Sounds good to me :-)

Third time unlucky too. Observations:

1. I fucking hate Jermain Beckford. Shame he's not playing for us  :hmmm:

2. Our defence is at least consistent. Consistently shite.

3. Why is that the hoo ha surrounding the play off winners seems to far outweigh actually winning the league or being runners up? I will tell you why, because the play offs are a fucking CON.

4. Nemo pointing out that next season is actually League 1 North is bloody depressing. Cov or Sarfend the nearest? Oh my days

5. I'm going to skilfully avoid the PL team friendlies as well. Yay, let's try and restrain the Kiwis and make some kinda fist of the Ashes instead.

Thank you and good night

I didn't go (thankfully) and lumped on Preston. I did everything within my power to jinx it for Preston!
If only the players put in as much effort!!!

As the game kicked off I have serious regrets about not going, 2 minutes later I'm glad I didn't.

That game against Millwall and the total non performance still hurts. The other half asked and I ranked it as the 3rd worst day of my life (I don't know if that is a good thing or not?)
Spending all that time, money and effort of going to Wembley for an even worse performance would topped it no doubt.
