thats true Reg. but he's been playing at championship/premiership level since he left us and the step down to league one may not prove that difficult Marcus Stewart?..... Steve McMahon? Tommy Mooney? Glenn Hoddle? Mcmahon 40 odd games in a 4 year playing contract. Hoddle played in second flight having dropped from Le Championat. Mooney I'll concede successfully dropped from L1 to L2 in his 30's. |

I am just saying that those players dropped one division or more and were successful. McMahon may have only played 40 games out of a four year contract but they were 40 pretty impressive games. It wasn't his fault he got injured and it was in no small part down to his playing prowess that we pissed division 2 in 95-96.

Alan Reeves? Definitely Culverhouse. Best defender we've ever had IMO. I suppose Reeves did ok at the level we are now at but in div 1/Championship level he was out of his depth. |

In his way yes, I would say Culverhouse was better. He was a different sort of defender to Fridge and Shaun Taylor who were very much of the traditional British 'blood and thunder' variety (and both excellent servants to the club)
Culverhouse was more subtle in that he wasn't happy just winning a tackle, he would slide in, take the ball away from his opponents toes, come away with the ball and play a simple pass to McMahon or Horlock or O'Sullivan or whoever and we'd be back on the attack again. He didn't even really look much like a centre half but very little got past him.
Much as I loved the Fridge, the original OST and Tim Parkin, I've not seen better than Culverhouse.

Then i got fat and lazy, and quickly switched to what is now known as 'The Lucas Neill'...

Then i got fat and lazy, and quickly switched to what is now known as 'The Lucas Neill'... All of these dropped down from the top flight or thereabouts into the second flight......which is still quite a high standard of football.....one of the axioms of the game is that its easy to look good with good players around you, which is why the likes of Phil Neville get over 50 England caps, put him in our side and he'd look even worse than he does at Everton. |

Class! April 1996 last minute goal. Very cold day. It was my 4th Swindon game  That was an excellent game, class goal too, so deserved to win that day. I think that was also the only day that I was pleased that Oxford won beating Blackpool 1-0 with Joey Beachamp scoring a late winner as that meant we went back above Blackpool back to the top of the table. Unfortunately I didn't know then that Blackpool would just fall away and Oxford would nick the 2nd promotion place. |
