Don't get me (us?) wrong, I am very proud to be English, but for the Olympics we compete as Britain, and in the games in our own country the national obsession should be represented by us. My main theory is that the Scots and Welsh etc are more worried about having only 1 or 2 players in the sqaud than anything else. They'd hate to be represented by a nearly all english side in the football. Most of them probably support English runners or swimmers when they compete for Britain but would hate it in footy. Depends how they do it. Maybe here will be a quota from each country? Even so, still against it. Dont even like the British Lions (last tour was an england retirement XV!!!)

The Lions were good a few years ago before the English domination. Watching them was class in the 90's. And when you see the clips of the 70's Lions, pure magic.

It spares the welsh and scots the embarrassment of not having any players selected in team GB. Even Giggs isnt good enough to play in the england first team

No NI is part of the UK, or in the case of the Olympics the full team name of Great Britain and Northern Ireland I think, NI are definately are part of the GB team though.

No NI is part of the UK, or in the case of the Olympics the full team name of Great Britain and Northern Ireland I think, NI are definately are part of the GB team though. Not quite. NI actually comes under the Olympic comittee of Ireland (as in the whole island as opposed the the republic of Ireland) there is however an agreement that athletess from the province can chose to represent either Eire or GB. This, obvously, is down to the religous/political differences. And can we have a serious debate about whether you want a team GB as opposed to wee snidey remarks that no one from Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland are good enough to get in the england team. That is not the question. For Arguments sake, it is a GB team of 20 players, 5 from each country. Doesnt matter who the players are. infact, as it is an under 23 tournament and it is in 7 years time, odds are we wont have heard of any of them yet anyway!

Id take a GB team, obviously they'd have to agree on how many players from each Nation would represent Team GB.

The whole thing about quotas is wrong, in no other sport at the olympics do they pick the GB team on where they are from, they pick the best squad to win, it'd be over representative of England true, but we're by far the largest country by population and the best footbal team out of the lot so would obviously have more players in teh side.

Well in that case then, whats the point of having a team GB if it doesnt truely represent GB??? I think each of the home nations should have seperate olympic teams anyway. It works for the commonwealth games, why not the olympics?

That's probably the only solution really, otherwise there'd be a farce in some events like Curling whe probably the UK top 10 players are all Scottish, certainly the top 2 sides are, if you siad you have to drop these players to accomodate the English, Welsh and Irish it'd be a bit rubbish.
