Damp specialists

Can anyone recommend a damp specialist in Swindon. Got a patch of it in front room that needs sorting. Thought it was condensation but floorboards up and its damp.

I used Rentacure from Witney but the bloke that did it came from swindon. Had rising damp in the living room

Yes. I've used Renderproof twice in the last 6 months, been very good. Would recommend getting hold of them.

I'd carefully check what the problem is and think about it sources/causes logically before taking the advice of someone trying to sell you a solution, sounds like you have made a good start by discounting condensation before going further.

Based off 25+ years of dealing with the aftermath of people having damp problems 'solved' that either didn't exist or the source was incorrectly identified.

They were great and have been out many a time to look at things and do a mini survey without charging. Its thanks to them we found that a massive crack between out extension (1980's) and the house (1832) was filled in using decorators caulk and it meant that water was coming in during even the lightest downpour. They sealed it with a sealant until we got the entire wall repointed and the crack stitch drilled last year (to the tune of £11k).

They were the ones that damp proofed most of our downstairs walls when the builder we bought the house off was renovating it (huge story behind that). When we called them back in for the above issue they said the builder was stingy and didn't want on particular side of the house damp proofed. Subsequently found it was wall that has all the leaks was the wall he didn't want done.

We have been in here five years now and can't redecorated as during very freak weather conditions we have the above leak (wind has to be blowing a very specific way). We will have the roof looked into and possibly replaced, and then potentially that entire inside wall from top to bottom the entire length of the house damp proofed. We were going to get it done this year but we are paying for our wedding so its put it off until next year now.

Also as a result of one of their visits they recommended a Positive Input Ventilation unit (PIV) be put in and it has solved so many issues. We would get condensation most of the year and in the winter the walls and windows were dripping wet with water, you couldn't even see out the windows it was that bad, we also had mould growing all over the place that was a battle to treat and clean all the time. Since the PIV was fitted we haven't had any condensation whatsoever, even on the coldest days of the year meaning our mould problem has completely disappeared. bonus is it costs £7 a year to run as it uses so little electricity and heats the air before pumping it in.

Can't complain too much as its our first ever house and we bought it more for the location than the house itself, so we knew it would have issued.

Which PIV did you go for? I've looked into getting for years now and never gone for it. Mainly looked at Nuaire

I can't remember the exact model, when we asked they said usually they fit the Nuaire Drimaster-Eco Heat Model No Controls - DRI-ECO-HEAT-HCS model, but at the time there was a shortage or they were hard to get hold of. We have the next best named one though.

I swear by PIV's in older buildings now though. Ours is rate up to five bedrooms, so if you had more than five I would probably recommend you get two fitted, and also make sure there is a 10mm gap under all doors to allow air to travel around the house still with doors shut.

We do suffer from condensation on windows and walls and have been using a dehumidifer to counter it all. It sounds like i need to get a PIV unit to help combat it all then!

There is no such thing as rising damp. It is either penetrating through pipe leak guttering fail etc or it is condensation. I went on course with bloke who tried to make water rise up brick work in a lab.  Blew all our surveyors minds but true.

Would also recommend a PIV100%.  Had endless problems with my parents 1960’s bungalow, some damp in the walls and mainly in the corners on the ceiling.  Had a damp company come out and do all the tests etc.   They concluded lack of air circulation was the cause,  not sure if was caused by windows not being open enough or just because poor ventilation.  They recommended putting a PIV in the roof which we did.   Seems to have worked very well, have had no new problems since. Can’t remember the name of the company but can dig it out for you if you want it. Also can’t remember the cost, think it was just over a grand for the survey and the unit fitted.  Money well spent and quite  cheap to run.
