Interesting team. I think I'd have started RHM to try and keep his form (one game) going, but we have options so no harm in using them.

Aguiar starting is interesting, hope he kicks on - I can't see him as an obvious DM but no harm in giving it a go in a dead season I guess.

To reiterate about RHM being pissed off, Gunning was on the radio saying you play well and you will get picked, simple, you play badly and you will get dropped. Fucking irony that after RHM's best game of the season on Tuesday.

Only 2 CBs, so 4-5-1?

Exactly the same formation and style as we played on Tuesday I would think. 4 at the back with Harry and McGurk wide attackers/midfield.

Yes it should be that way but RHM was actually quite brilliant at times on Tuesday yet gets dropped.

Well, he took him off Tuesday when on a hat trick so maybe he still needs to be ‘managed’ seemingly along with half the squad.

Seems odd to drop RHM after mid week but let’s also not forget RHM has missed loads of football the last 5 or so years due to the injury. So perhaps we are just managing his minutes?

…of course there is other stuff to take into consideration like who will or will not be here next season. For arguments sake if it’s know RHM won’t sign a new deal is there any point?

Maybe Harrogate have quicker defenders that Tranmere so we’re going for different tactics that work better with other players

Or maybe the team selection was pure random.

Who really knows

You get the feeling Gunning may be a little obnoxious behind the scenes.

He's a bit obnoxious in front of the scenes!

Lots of good managers are though. And lots of bad ones.

It’s not just the player rotation, though. The whole set up changes. Tuesday had Minturn and Dokes at LB and RB - very successfully. Now Minturn doesn’t even make the squad so Dokes will have to revert to CB. 2 up front Tuesday is now, I suppose, Drinan on his own.

How do you get any consistency changing players and set up game by game.

He actually said some quite interesting stuff about the full back set up in the presser- he wants to have two full backs who can play either side, will use the 'inverted' style (UGM on the left) against certain wingers and thinks that young CBs i.e. Minturn should learn their trade at full back. Between the lines I think he doesn't fancy Kokolo as an inverted RB (fair enough) but will let him play as a standard LB.

In this team UGM is RB, Kokolo LB, FBT and McCarthy central, right?

As for the forwards, McKirdy could definitely be playing the Glatzel role in this line up. We'll see.

Having all moaned (rightly) about Flynn playing Plan A under all circumstances and if it didn't work, trying Plan A, I'd rather Gunning trying stuff based on the opposition. It won't always work, but I think it has a better chance than the "we just play our game" stuff which only works if you're very good at it.
