I see some court has vetoed Trump’s whole tariff ‘policy’. Judged he has overstepped his authority - only Congress can authorise.
The whole tariff thing uses powers that are given to the President for use in cases of emergency, bypassing congress. It's not that he can't levy tariffs at all outside of that, it just needs to go through congress in the same way it would need to go through parliament here.
Trump has chosen to interpret the trade deficit as an emergency, despite the US last having a trade surplus in 1975.
It's obvious bollocks, but I'm sure it plays well to his base.
