And a street by the station.....as a kid I was always taken by the sign Back of Gooch Street. Don't know if it is still there, but seemed to me to be the only street to have its back named. The original Sir Dan, was a lovely building....so in true Swindon planner style, bulldozed and replaced by a carbuncle. |

Thamesdown Transport used to have a heritage bus named after him as well. Remember catching it on a summer holiday special to the Oasis.

Don't forget the street... Gooch was also a key driver for the setting up of the hospital in Emlyn Square...a sort of forerunner of the NHS. New and Old Swindon were only incorporated in 1900, and there was for a long time a sense of it being 2 different places. |

Bashful Alley in Lancaster got its name as a street that ladies used to avoid being hassled in the middle ages... We also have lots of signs to Clitheroe.. which make you chuckle once someone points out what is says if you break the name in half... We are doing even less to honour Daniel Gooch here than Swindon has done, perhaps move to a new thread? |

I was convinced that there was another Gooch Crescent/Close/Drive in West Swindon that I remember delivering papers to as a paperboy nearly 30 yrs ago. And I've just wasted about 5 mins looking for it...only now to realise that the road I was really remembering was Gower Close, Grange Park. Funny how word association plays tricks with your memory. |
