My heart sinks whenever I hear the word 'utility' to describe a player.
Bar the GK, haven't most of last seasons squad been used as utilities in their respective thirds of the pitch?
Turnbull/stephens - CB/CDM
Byrne/Tofolo/B.Smith RB/LB/RWB/LWB/LW/RW
Rest of the midfielders were on rotation as vary CM/CDM/CAM/Holding Role/
Strikers were used as LWA/RWA/Target/No.10/False9 etc.
Maybe saying utility was a little skewed, but i mean players were utilised across their position. At an Elite level it's a hard skill to retain and keep that intensity. Obviously a lot of players are ok to play wherever the manager puts them. Refining it at an elite level is a different ball game. Most focus on becoming great in one position and not ok in several. Although some players do manage it.
What was asked of our players (positional wise) was quite a risk which may be reason as to why we became exposed. I'm certain several of them will go on to be great "utility players". Someone like Francomb would be a great fit as he is experienced across the WB/W/CAM/CDM and could work a great partnership with B-O-O as unlike last season, Francomb covers you when you go bombing forward.
