Don't think Putin is overly bothered about the rest of the Ukraine, what Russia have always coveted is a warm water port, which is where the Crimea come in.

It's the same reason that NATO were getting all cosy with the Ukraine, to deny Russia access to it.
Once that option is gone the west will soon turn their backs on the Ukraine, unless of course they have a lot of oil we could use
