Whoever takes it will be slaughtered the moment anything goes wrong, thus everyone thinks Mourinho is the obvious choice because he has an ego the size of Belgium and wouldn't care what anyone thought.

He's going out on top, winning the title and getting it back from Man City...1500 games at United by the time he'll have finished! Great achievement!

Just saw this in the comments section on the BBC. Made me laugh :

First Thatcher dies and now Fergie retires. Somewhere out there there's a Scouser with a magic lamp and one wish left...

Looks like it's Moyes, he's 10/1 on now with the bookies.

The more I think about it, the more Mouriniho looks like George Michael.

Seriously, mentally stick some sunglasses on those pictures.

I've discussed this with Manure supporting mates over the years and i've always seen Moyes as the man to take over and they haver not always agreed. Now the time has come i'm not sure myself as Fergies shoes are maassive ones to fill. Moyes has not had huge sums of money to spend and although he has done a great job at Everton hasn't won anything.

Mourinho has a huge ego so the job won't faze him and he guarantees trophies. Doesn't stay at clubs for years though so that counts against him a bit

Jose is the cheese.

The only sensible choice if you're Man Utd.

I know he's been on about retirement for years, but it all seems a bit sudden.

Am I the only one that's thinking the Man Utd board / owners realised that if they wanted Mourinho as Ferguson's replacement then the only time was now and they must've given him some incentive (£££) to go?

You'd still take Ferguson over Mourinho though.

Mourinho keeps becoming available every couple of years anyway...
