Di Canio fears promotion bid may slip without further loan signings

PAOLO Di Canio is fearful Swindon Town’s promotion bid could be derailed if he is unable to bring in more players during the emergency loan window.

Double standards from PDC?!  Hmmm

He's quoted as saying that Adam Rooney joined with no fitness whatsoever, then gets shot of Zavon Hines in pre-season after a day because he wasn't fit.

A valid point. I hope JW has the balls to say No to PDC. As much as I want to see us promoted, I don't want it to be at all costs. The club has to be sustainable regardless of how deep the owners pockets are.

We have a pretty large squad, and have cover for all the positions he mentions. We have loan players not being used, so it seems to me that if we send them back we will come back under the cap.

I am happy to enjoy the ride on the PdC circus, but he doesn't come across well in the media.

Sorry to get in the way of a good argument with some actual facts, but:

Squad sizes of the top 10 teams (Taken directly from their official sites)

Swindon     - 25 (Including L Rooney)
Tranmere    - 22
Stevenage  - 26
Sheffield     - 29
Dongs        - 19
Crawley      - 26
Notts Co.    - 27
Preston NE  - 26
Brentford    - 24
Doncatser   - 22

While we may have quality throughout the squad, it is not as 'massive' as some people are making out. Interesting to see dongs on only 19. One has to wonder whether they will still be there or thereabouts if the keep a squad that size.

Personally, I think PDC should focus on why we are picking up injuries so regularly in the first place.

Good point, but I would answer by saying that at 25 he has more than 2 players per position, so deal with it. The win at Bury showed that you can play a player out of position at a pinch for a game or two and still get the result.

If Paolo wants to be considered a good manager, he has to learn to manage the resources he has rather than just want to spend his way out of the league.

I totally agree FH I argued the same point on the Creepy forum when they were saying earlier in the season about squad size and us buying every player we could....when in actual fact at the time Creepy had 3 more registered players than we did.

We have an average size squad for this league but the large amount of injuries incurred is way above what it should be.

I think Paolo needs to take a long hard look at the fitness trianing employed by the club because it obviously isn't working as it should, we should be the fittest team in the league and we aren't.

Not if they're injured he doesn't.

Again, that seems to be the real source of the problem. Reduce the number of injuries to a normal level and it gives him a larger squad to play with.

A fair point.

Even so its the cost of the quality that's the issue. I'm not sure its quite as simple as sending loan players back. I have no idea whether we are committed to paying for a % of wage for N months regardless?

very interesting the only slight problem is how many of these players in other squads are youth team players rather than expensive players.  It would certainly be interesting to see how our wage bill compares to the rest of the division, as there is so much crap and misinformation swirling around I think the club should try to clarify this even if only in general terms such as we're in the top 1/3rd but there are clubs with higher wage bills for example.

Again this is nullified by the fact we seem to be picking up too many injuries.

We probably are in the top third when it comes to wages. Don't think there's much doubt about it. Expect we're in the top third when it comes to income at the moment too though so not really surprising.

It's all relative. Bury had less than 3,000 there Saturday and we took 400 of those so i'd expect their wage bill to be a lot less than ours.

I am not so concerned at the squad size, more the revolving door transfer policy.

I was going to make the point that consistency is important but Paolo has disproved that already.
