on what basis?

Because he was bought by Newcastle for about £6m, then hardly played a game for Newcastle because he was shite. He's since been sent back on loan to Spain.

1. Shevchenko £32mn to Chelsea
2. Heskey £11m to Liverpool
3. Veron £28m to Man Utd

I cannot think of any worse three than those. 1 and 3 being total vanity wank purchases and no.2 being just utter fucking unadulterated gash.

2.  39 goals in 118 Prem starts is a long way from being terrible...certainly not in the class of Alberto Aquillani

Reg, I didn't say he was terrible. I just think £32mn for a 30 year old is pretty shocking - especially when he'd visibly peaked at about 26/27 and his legs had gone.  I really rated Shevchenko when he was younger.

Just symbolic of modern football though isnt it? Chelsea didn't actually care that they'd hosed £32mn down the drain as they could afford it.

*Have just realised you were talking about Heskey! I'm not going to bother with that...802 England caps, a couple of shots near the oppositions goal.

Heskey's England performance has no bearing on the PL worst transfers....

Heskey was terrific for most of his time at Liverpool.

Going further back, what about Justin Fashanu for Forest or Thomas Brolin for Leeds?  Both were a truly appalling waste of money..
