keeping in touch with people more easily

finding out things you might not know by following your non-social media channels (e.g. court case proceedings)

fundraising efforts to a larger audience.

finding out about events in the local area

finding out about issues in the local area

etc etc

You've always been able to do all of those things. People talk less than ever before. Social does not help us connect. It does the opposite.

From somebody who lives on the other side of the world to many friends and family, social media is a godsend.

It's not social media per se that's the problem. It's that it seems to attract the worst in society. Especially twitter.

You see it all the time. Out for a drink/meal, on the beach there are always loads of couples on their phones ignoring each other.

And its not just younger couples.

I've been guilty of that in the past. But have made a real conscious effort not to turn into those couples so generally leave my phone at home. (unless Swindon are playing or whatever and I want to know the score etc) As you rightly said Aud, its people of all ages. Last time we went out there was a couple in their sixties (at a guess) both glued to their screens. They are probably bored of each other.  Smartphones are magnetic these days!

Which is a problem with how it's used - not with social media itself.

Personally, I don't use mine at all when I'm socializing and if other people in my group are then I'd ask them why. But I don't think I've ever needed to.

Think social media has a large role to play with the Ofsted report that's come out today about sexual harrassment of teenage girls. Reportedly some girls can get '10/11' requests a night from boys for sexual images and you know it's all going on over Snapchat and what have you.

I'm not opposed to social media per se but I do think that it's creation has led to some unintended consequences, a lot of it deeply harmful. But I don't know what the solution is either.

Social media in schools is awful. We ban it internally, but the use outside is awful.

We have parents slag off teachers/the schools. It’s a platform for keyboard warriors.

Adverts, especially Currys, that give monetary values without a unit e.g. 'this Freezer only 169'.

It's trivial, but it winds me up no end.

Huge project cut over weekend for my work and stupid me said that rather than give up my whole weekend i would just power through and do everything in one hit. I'm 14hrs in so far and caffeine is my best friend right now.
The worse thing is that most of it is just monitoring tasks because every though a lot is automated, i have major trust issues.

Breaking news! Shock horror. Footballer dies for 1 minute and then gets up to run 50 yards at full pelt and score sensation. I think you might need something to take the edge off as this is going to be the mother of all tournaments  for the diving oscars.
