Weirdly, I secretly enjoyed late-night essay writing in the library and kind of miss it.

There was something soothing about the vending machine breaks, the quiet, the fact I was the only non-asian working that late. I find I think more clearly after midnight as well for some reason.

Hence why I'm up at 4am tonight.

I assumed that the third term started today, but it's not for another 2 weeks. So I've been up all night doing an essay thinking it was for today... I am a retard.

At least it's done now....did you find out any more on the Baroque in the Habsburg Empire of Centralk Europe. I had a bit of a think and felt it had more influence on music and architecture, rather than visual art....

I know someone who was always really forgetful at university, so got us to write his due dates a week or so early. He could never remember that he did this (he was a bit... special at times), so about a week before an essay was due I'd always see him frantically rushing around the library, desperately trying to do stuff 'last minute'.

Always made us chuckle.

I've only done 500 words so far, 12 hours of reading. I can tell you a whole host of things about the subject now though.

The 4 trends prevalent throughout the Habsburg domain in this period were
                   -conflict between estates and princely absolutism
                   -economic development under ideas of mercantilism
                   -struggle between Reformation and Counter Reformation (that's quite obvious)
                   -influence of Baroque arts in general

Baroque came in waves for the Habsburgs, Prague first, then Vienna. Hungary didn't really get as much exposure as Bohemia or the hereditary lands.

With the whole music/architecture/art debate, the lasting legacy would have to be the architecture, the music didn't really penetrate below the aristocracy at the time, Leopold I spent obscene amounts in its support, despite the lack of funds in the royal pot. The art I haven't really done much research on but obviously baroque art made religious concepts easier for the peasantry to understand, helping bridge the gap between high and low culture and confirm the Counter Reformation's dominance, but I couldn't really name a famous piece of art. Literature benefited a lot too, very rich period for German literature in particular, works such as Simplicius Simplicissimus.

The whole thing seems to be an apotheosis of dynasty, church, aristocracy, orchestrated by the elite but accomplished by the people.

Don't you think? 

I've always been interested in trying to decide the relative impact of developments in art/music/literature/architecture of teh Baroque, on the various sections of society at the time.

For example, I'm a big fan of George Freidrich Handel, but there must have been only a tiny % of people living in England who ever heard his work...definitely an elite.
