I might be on my own here - which would be a real shame, but each to their own I suppose - but I am very excited and proud that we have a British player in the Wimbledon final, and with a chance of winning it. I really don't get the dislike of Andy Murray - I think often the criticism of him being a bit surly is essentially thinly-veiled (although not always on here!) xenophobia along the lines of "we finally get a good one, and he's bloody Scottish". People also didn't like Tim Henman for being a bit too middle class. 74 years without a finalist and yet unless we get one who is the proper English working class hero we are not happy.
I actually like the slight cynical aura Murray gives off. As a British and English (alphabetical) sports fan, I'm a bit fed up of friendly, likeable, or heroic failure. Give me a clinical victory through skill, technique and a bit of cynicism any day.
My word what a rant. All I wanted to say was Go On Murray!!!

Scottish people wouldn't support an Englishman so why support them? I don't support Scotland when they're playing football, why is this any different.

It's a different context completely. Andy Murray is not "playing for England", "playing for Scotland" or "playing for Britain". He is a British player in an individual sport, who is the first to reach the final of that sport's best regarded competition for a lifetime. I support England in football, Rugby, Cricket (although see England and Wales Cricket Board). I will be cheering on the GB athletes in a few weeks time. I was just as pleased years ago to see Colin Jackson win medals as I am for Murray.
Each to their own - but Coca, I don't see the comparison you make at all.

I like Murray. He's got a decent, dry sense of humour, is an exciting tennis player, and is passionate about what he does. All the English/Scottish thing is irrelevant. In football, we play separate, and don't want eachother to win; but for tennis we are represented (for want of a better term) as he UK - which includes Murray and his Sweaty cohorts. I don't need him to support my national football team to want him to do well - he's a much more interesting character than most of the decent tennis folk (although aside from Roddick, they're all pretty dull), and he's a fucking good tennis-er. I'd take him over Tiger Tim or that Canadian chap hands down.
C'mon Murray.

He is to Davis Cup what Ryan Giggs is to a Wales friendly. Suspect he'll be OK for the Olympics though. But I echo your c'mon Murray.

To be fair, Murray is always British when he is in the competition then Scottish when he loses

All this not supporting a Scot who represents Britain is gonna make supporting our Olympic athletes a trifle complicated.
How about Paul Di Resta today?
