Having to cut out normal spelling and basic grammar is order to make a tweet under 140 characters.

"@STGary_Rose Obviously vry disappointed 2 have lost 2 them in particular, but pretty much all other results went R way, could B a lot worse!"

I really don't understand the deep seated hatred people have for one another based solely on their geographical location or choice of football team.

Not sure I'm really cut out for this whole football lark to be honest.
It's a very interesting point you raise Mr Sonic. As far as I can see, every set of fans has to have a 'team they love to hate'. It is probably fare to say that it's the cornerstone of fan culture. Usually, these 'hate figures' pick themselves and are based on geographical location i.e Man U v Man C, Liverpool v Everton, Norwich v Ipswich and so on.

Where there is no obvious local rival though, fans will select (and appear to be desperate to have) a 'hate figure' based on other criteria. Gillingham for example, have no obvious local rivals - Maidstone Unted or Dartford would be the most logical ones but for obvious reasons these have never come to fruition (for any rivalry to work, you have to play each other at least occasionally however close you may be geographically). So they chose us, based as far as I can tell, on a game played in 1981 when both sides were going for promotion and it kicked off big time with a multi-player brawl in the tunnel leading to the Police actually knicking a couple of their players.

Another example is the rivalry between Colchester and Wycombe Wanderers. At one point, both clubs were going for promotion from the Conference and geographically, neither team had a 'hate figure' of any relevance so they adopted each other. As far as I know, both teams still 'hate' each other.

So you could argue that it's more important to have a bit of history as rivals than it is to be geographically close. This is why Cheltenham and Wycombe mean fuck all to us (what we mean to them, I have no idea). Whatever the reason for it is though, it is vital for any set of fans to have someone they 'love to hate'.

To me though, ultimately it's not something to be taken too seriously. Certainly not to the level of ripping up seats and lobbing them into a crowd of people or chucking coins or ripping up public toilets. I happen to think it's possible to have a rivalry with a bit of humour thrown in but that seems to be lost on most football fans sadly.

That seems to be the difference between us and oxford in the main.

We seem to want to beat them on the pitch, they want to beat us off it too..

Fair point. forgotten that happened.

Though from what I can see via here & twitter that the only 'trouble' from us.

as apposed to chucking coins/ Chairs and throwing stuff at coaches?

Obviously I follow mainly Swindon fans so I could not have heard about some stuff.

I think SY was referring to actual HATE.

Some people seem to genuinely HATE people purely because they support a different team. I love a bit of rivalry and banter myself, but the whole actual HATRED thing is nuts.

Man U v Man C, Liverpool v Everton, Norwich v Ipswich and so on.

Don't think any of these clubs supporters hate the other to be honest. I know quite a few Mancs, on both sides of the Utd/Citeh divide and from what they tell me there's not a lot of hatred between the supporters at all.

Same with Liverpool/Everton, yeah both sides want bragging rights but there's not a lot of hatred amongst supporters is there? I thought families were torn in two red and blue.

Now the Liverpool/Manchester hatred, that's a different matter.

Ralphy - might be worth looking at your lifestyle - I suffered really badly then changed a few things and improved immensely.

Yes, they do genuinely HATE people for supporting another team. I was trying to put forward a reason as to why they hate fans of a particular team. The reason as far as I can see is (as I said) that every team has to have a 'hate figure'. Why is that? Fuck knows, ask Desmond Morris.

First of all Jan, you don't think any Man U fans hate Man City fans? (or vice versa) or that any Liverpool fans hate Everton fans? Those rivalries are not quite as friendly and cosy as you seem to think.

That aside though, that wasn't the point I was trying to make, they were just examples (maybe not the best ones). I was just trying to get at where this so called 'hatred' comes from and why fans of any team would hate fans of another, regardless of who those teams are.
