That first bit is so patronising and incorrect that I'm struggling to take you seriously.

I was present at all of the games through this whole period, and I know what I'm talking about. If you've lived amongst that lot THE OPPOSITE is true - you learn to ignore what they say. You're making a random and unfounded statement about something which you know nothing about, ie me.

Your stats all come from the period from when they were still not considered a rival. Your stats are from the times when it was a one-sided affair still. The hostility from our side started after this period. Plus it's not just about numbers - surely you're aware of the gradual change in attitude towards O*ford of the Town fans during the 80's & 90's?! Do you know how many people were put off by the trouble when they came to town? We've had plenty of paltry attendances vs Reading & Shitty too, by the way.

Anyone that swats this rivalry away is living in the past - simple as that.

You posted on the beard thread, that you were 40....which would have made you 3 or 4 for the 73/74 match and 8 or 9 for the 78/79 match.

Without wishing to be patronising, but simply trying to get accuracy of information, I'd suggest your historical analysis is wrong.

Reg, did you ever have any trouble at the Manor during the 70's and 80's?

I went to the first match in 65/66....subsequent games in the early 70's, including going in the London Road , and others in the 80's and 90's.  Only ever seen the odd skirmish, nothing on the same scale as games v the likes of Shitty, Rovers, Pompey even Plymuff.

Growing up in West Oxon, I've never come in contact with many City fans but lots of Oxford fans.

I despise them immensely.

I only knew one Oxford fan and he was Spurs fan when it suited him best.

Spot on comments Fitton. I only started in the mid 80's, but it will always be the Pox.  Can't imagine a day when it's anyone else.   I'm happy for them to have a few more years of pub league, but next time we do play it will be fucking awesome

I see what people mean when they're describing you! No offence, I find you quite interesting, and debating is good. But I must stress that just because someone disagrees with you it doesn't automatically make them wrong.

You are correct, and as I said a few posts ago I started going to games in the mid-seventies. I was very young, but I have many Town & O*ford supporting friends/family of all ages who have been watching games since the late 1940's, so I have first-hand accounts from both sides which cover a long period of time.

Without wishing to repeat myself, if you aren't aware of the growing hostilities in said period then you either haven't been to these games, or you've been a heavy drinker for decades. Can I politely suggest that you ask people about the running battle up & down the Shrivvy Road in 96/97 (which I saw from close-quarters), or the other running battles around Manchester Road/train station year upon year? My best mates' Dad got a proper pasting in the London Road End in the early 70's. I've seen many a battle in the grounds of the John Radcliffe Hospital behind the Cuckoo Lane End, and in the streets of the Osler Road, London Road, further down the Headington Hill, in the centre of O*ford, Paddington Station......

Sorry to disappoint you, Reg, but this isn't me just believing stories from spotty teenagers. And the stats that you lift out of your smelly old books don't tell the whole story.

Wouldn't it be 1000 in the Arkells on top of that, ie what Soton & Leeds had?

Didn't we just give Gillingham the SB a few years back cos of potential trouble?

Oxford United became big rivals because they were non-league upstarts joining the league in 1962 following the demise of Accrington Stanley who resigned and had their record expunged.  Had it been a case of reelection, maybe history would have been different.  Personalities were large at Oxford with Ron and Reggie Kray, er I mean Ron and Graham Atkinson being at the club. Gerry Scummers was the manager for some time, who I recall complained about his team not being physical enough although they seemed to do more than their fair share of shoving and clogging.  Scummers of course later managed the Pikeys with a similar style.

History would tell us that Oxford United's league history is merely a blip and they remain in non league where they have spent most of their time since formation as Headington United in 1897.

Having been pelted with stones at Elm Park, I believe there is a fierce rivalry between Reading and Swindon fans, however on that occasion I was the victim of friendly fire.

Yeh we did, but this season they were in the Arkells (and chucked a fair few coins at us - some of which just missed me, and Mr Fitton behind me).

But yeh you're right, I suppose the Club & police would make a joint decision at the time.

Fitton was behind you? That's disgraceful, he should have taken his place in the front lines repelling the hordes instead of using fans as human shields. Fitton Out! Smiley
