I'm giving up next Monday after smoking for 34 years because I'm getting breathless and my circulation is crap.  I've never tried to quit before because I love smoking and I've not really felt bad healthwise before now. I've got the patches and inhalers but I think the main battle will be in my head as smoking started as my personal rebellion against the way I was brought up - smoking is my thing, it's what I do and sod anyone that doesn't like it sort of attitude.  Another thing that helps is working in the NHS and getting to meet people who can't walk 10 yards because their lungs are fucked - some of them are only a few years older than me and don't smoke as much.  One thing I have promised myself if I stay off the fags for 6 weeks I'll plough the cash saved into a season ticket for next year - it's "found money" so even if I can't make every game it's no problem and the club wins.

If they did nicotine free cigarettes I might think about starting again.

It's not the nicotine which kills you though! Smiley

I'm pretty crap, i've given up multiple times per year for the last few years. About 10 years ago i went a year and didn't miss it. The trouble is i always do eventually and i convince myself i've got to smoke because it's my only vice.

I bought an electric cigarette a few weeks back, nicotine free. Supposedly they're to giving up smoking what vaginas are to a productive night, so i got one. May well just be the manufacturer of the one i bought, but it doesn't feel like you're inhaling anything, and despite being "realistic tobacco flavour" it tastes like disco smoke machine. And you have to suck it sooooo hard. So, has a fag yesterday. And today. Decided to stop being a cock and just stop. Again. They went down the toilet earlier.

I actually get angry when i smoke now, such is the disappointment i have in myself. That is my new motivator and having the money to by porcelain teeth vaneers.  Mwah

Think we've talked about this before, however.........

Get a book called 'The Easy Way To Stop Smoking by Allen Carr'.

The book will:
- Help you get into the right frame of mind
- Tell you why patches and gum either dont work or actually make it harder to stop
- Explain the feelings that you are having and how to combat them
- Give you lots of tips on how to 'stop' smoking (there is nothing to 'give up')

Sounds like bollocks, but believe me it is very good. I too was very good at stopping but just that little bit better at restarting. I read the book, stop for a while, started again, reread various chapters of the book again and then stopped for good. I might choose to smoke again one day, but I haven't in the last 2 years or so and dont intend to anytime soon.

Much cheaper than gum or patches  - especially if you nip down to the library and get a copy!

I gave up 4 years ago in May. I've had two cigarettes since. After almost 30 years on 20-40 a day I feel much healthier & have lost the smokers cough etc. I used the gum & got it on prescription initially. Problem is whilst people smoking around me doesn't bother me & I feel no urge to smoke at all I am still addictted to nicotine & am still on the gum !
Having said that it's still cheaper & healthier than cigs so I'm happy with that.
As has been said you do gain weight, & I too gained 2 stone, but am now back to my smoking weight

Yeah I realise that, but if I could have a sneaky fag every now and then without having to become a full time smoker again I would Smiley

you should get a nicotine free e-cigarette then. Might be just what you need. Smiley

I gave up about three and a half years ago - willpower, and I made an agreement with the superior half (at my behest) that she would withdraw the the good stuff for three months for every one I smoked after quitting.  I didn't cave once.  I did develop an interest in cheese and get a bit chunky though.

BUMP!  I've now packed in the fags for 8 weeks so I'm going to be true to my word and get a season ticket with the dosh I've saved.  I just need some advice as to where I should sit as I don't want to be stuck next to some negative moaning fucker for the whole of next season -  DRS stand

I've been a none smoker for 3 months or so. I have had the odd lapse, but i haven't enjoyed it. I haven't noticed any difference in anything either BR, but i do wonder whether that's the smoker in me convincing me smoking is actually every bit as good as i fondly remember.
