I remember that Fjortoft sale so well. I was sat in the computer room at uni, supposedly writing up my dissertation, but was on tenterhooks hoping it didn't happen. Who did we sign to fill the void - Terry Gibson ffs. I seem to recall being involved in some group letter of outrage that ended up in the adver.
I still have the letter (sort of, I suspect its in the box of stuff removed from my mums house when she died and now stored in my sisters garage in south Wales as a I have never collected it) from the Chairman (was it Ray Spearman) in response, the suggestion that in deciding to sell Steve McMahon 'searched his soul' has always stuck in my mind!

I think Gibson replaced Shearer.

Yep, Thorne arrived in the January, Fjortoft left in March, we then signed Steve Finney in the summer.

You are right. My memory is clearly failing me. Perhaps we didn't replace Fjortoft at all then Just seen the timeline. Thanks.

We didn't replace JAF at all we started playing Ty Gooden as a striker which clearly didnt work, if we had replace him we could have stayed up as we were only 2 points from safety when he left.

I bet McMahon's still looking for it. His soul, not your letter, that is.

10 games after JAF left, W2, D2, L6. Looking at the squad we had, not sure what happened, suggests that in addition to Thorne we also had Mutch and Scott on the books? http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/Squad.asp?Season=1994-1995I was at Uni in Newcastle this year, and whilst it was the first year that the internet really kicked off (I recall there being a town forum for instance), I don't really recall the season that much bar the League Cup semis!

The LC quarter and semis were great games the rest of the season is very easy to forget. Millwall at home was the scariest atmosphere I have ever seen at a Swindon match while I was stewarding, we had no support from the 100 Millwall stewards or the 200 police on duty.

6 blanks in the 9 games Town played post-JAF before being relegated tells its own story.
I was 11 and think the selling of Fjortoft marked the transition from my adolescent, naive enjoyment of football (where losing wasn't really an issue because football is just great) to obtaining the knowledge that football can really be a fucking nuisance.
Getting home from school and staring at the list of deadline day deals on CEEFAX and seeing Jan's name absolutely shattered me... as did Shaun Taylor's a year and a bit later (but that annoyed me more).

We seem to have a record of selling top scorers then getting relegated. Almost like its a bad idea or something!

Swindon Town, shooting themselves in the foot since 1879.

Is this code? Or do you actually mean the legendary ceefax page 'football news in brief'?
