Crewe the template as Byrne relishes new role

DAVID Byrne believes Crewe Alexandra’s famous academy is the role model of what he wants to achieve during his spell as head of player development at Swindon.

I remember quizzing McMahon, when he first arrived, at an open meeting.

I asked him about youth development, and if he had a template for the club....he suggested ManUre would be what we would follow....I suggested Crewe might be a better example. He got more and more red in the face as I argued with him...I thought he was going to stick one on me.  Afterwards I went and apologised, if he thought I was deliberately trying to wind him up....I wasn't.

We're approximately 15 years too late....the Crewe model has failed.

In terms of DB's new role covering player development at every level of the club, spanning the youths, reserves and first team, it's somewhat akin to what Arsene Wenger does - he takes a full role in laying down the template for every level of the club so that transition from (say) u16s to u18s to reserves to 1st team is seamless. But I dare say if that had been quoted as an example, the comments would have been full of "Byrne thinks he's Wenger" hence perhaps why he cites the lowlier example of Crewe. The point is this new role is more than just a new role within the youth setup, it's an overarching player development role that's more akin to what top-flight clubs do than anything done in the lower leagues

As implied in my original post, there was a time when Crewe were an exemplar of the sort of thing we should aim at....but that time has passed.

The problem for Crewe is that to maintain their set up requires such heavy funding, that it becomes a must to sell a player a season to maintain the facilities etc. This at a time when the big clubs have spread their nets to trawl up not only the best home grown talent but global talent.

When was the last time Crewe sold to a top flight club....I'd guess Varney to Charlton.

Much better to pursue the policy of taking academy drop outs, from top clubs, giving them a chance of first team football, and trying to mould a team.  Much the way King did with SSP, Howard, O'Hanlon etc.

Thats fair enough Reg but surely you must see that they obviously want to base themselves on the crewe model that worked and that the finances you mention fitton is prepared to invest.

Haha the fucker. Also this will help players make the transition from youths to first team. At every level they will play the same as the 1st team. Last year Macklin played for Bodin and williams both played a different way and you saw how that effected Macklin when he stepped up a level.

Well if Fitton announces anytime soon that he is funding full FA academy status at the CG, I'll be about as surprised as it's possible to get.  It isn't going to happen.

TBF I don't think that's what this article is about anyway...we want to get some young players develop them and flog them...nowt wrong in that, it's what Best Holdings wanted to do
