Ok, i have wired up my PS3 to my surround sound via an optical cable, whilst the PS3 is connected to the tv via and HDMI lead. Im having some sound issues, for example i can get sound running through the ss whilst playing Pro Evo, however if i try to play burnout i dont get any sound at all. Also some sound is not coming through while playing some blu ray discs. Does anyone have an idea why this is happening?

Bear in mind on the old tv the surround sound was plugged in via scart and everything worked absolutely spot on. (The surround system is also connected via and HDMI cable)

Help please!

I didn't think Optical was capable of carrying surround sound - only HDMI - I would suggest that this is your problem

Not true.

Optical will carry DPL and 5.1 but the PS3 is a pain in the arse to set up on this and the designers need flogging to within an inch of their life.

OK the pain in the ass is that the PS3 will not simultaneously output  sound to the HDMI cable AND the optical. Only one or the other.

The option you require is on the "sound settings" sub menu option. Can't remember the name of the 'menu' but it is the second from left hand most list of options. Make sure you select "sound options" not "music settings" or whatever.

When selected there is a choice of 2 or 3 further options "HDMI" and "Optical". Choose optical. Here the ticked options are output to optical, the unticked not. Tick them all and it will work.

Sound to HDMI will be disabled. When you need sound from the HDMI again go through the same process selecting "HDMI" this time and "auto select" (or whatever it is called. Sound to HDMI will be restored.

Lastly, make sure there aren't any sound options you need to set up in the game itself.

Does your TV have an optical out? If so, I'd plug the surround sound into that because the audio will be carried over HDMI.

Updated my post for for optical cabling.

If you need everything to go through HDMI then the same process should be applied but instead of "automatic" HDMI setup I think you can manually configure ?? If do then tick all the options for HDMI.

Basically you can direct any sound format to either HDMI OR optical but not both.

Did I mention Sony are cocks?

Just need to change audio settings to optical I think. Probably what happened is it reverted to default when you changed scart to HDMI

You had it set up fine Tans.

Like I said when I came round, make sure Optical is set to bitstream in the PS3's 'Video' menu.

Maybe.  I don't know, I just don't know.

As long as it works, that's the main thing.
