Ling wouldn't even be under consideration if he wasn't an ex-player.  Loved him when he was playing for us, but he's an average manager.  I hope we are aiming higher.

I might even see a small amount of logic on approaching him if he were 'available'. But to actually pay compensation money for him, not for me.

Dowie - never been a big fan of his managerial career really. BUT..he would be a big coup for us given he is quite high profile. And whilst he may not be my choice I wouldn't be sitting in the corner sulking if he is our manager.

mate of mine is an Oldham fan, and thinks the sun shines from Dowie's arse.
For 4 years , Oldham and Palace, the guy had a bloody impressive record, although lost his way a bit since then.

The longer this goes on the more I fear Byrne might be told he can carry on for the remainder of the season in order to try and create some stability over the crucial Christmas period.  As the uncertainty obviously effects the players and staff etc Fitton may feel it’s getting too late for a new man to get in, assess the squad and sort out the key areas we need to improve and Fitton may feel Byrne at least knows the squad so would have a better grip on what is needed to strengthen it.
This is definitely not what I want to happen but the way it’s dragging on suggests Fitton is struggling to get what he considers the right man for the job and may focus his attention on trying to keep us up this season and review the manager situation in the Summer.

I’ll probably get shot down as this obviously is all just me thinking out loud but it really is dragging on now and it’s unusual for these things to drag on for a month and seemingly have no inkling (at least in public) about who may get the job.

I don;t agree Glos, I think Fitton's taking so long so that he can get someone in. He can take as long as he needs if he gets the right man IMO.

I dont agree either.

Taking this long to just appoint the caretaker til the end of the season wouldnt make any sense, he could have done that straight away.

I kind of agree with glos' misgivings that it does seem to be dragging on a bit, but then I suspect whoever it was said yesterday that it may be that's because they've got close on one or two and it hasn't worked out so they've then had to restart. And I also agree with juddie - while it's nipple-wrenchingly annoying at the moment, if it means we get the right guy and in three years time we're looking back at several seasons of progression and a succesful start in the Championship, then hell, I'll even wait another week for that.

It's easy to forget the early stuff due to the way he left Palace, Coventary and QPR. I would get behind him 100% and see where it takes us. However I don't think it will be Dowie.

For the record his record is

Code:

Team                            From To                 G    W L D Win %
Queens Park Rangers     28 September 1998 16 October 1998 2 1 1 0 50.00
Oldham Athletic         31 May 2002         19 December 2003 82 31 23 28 37.80
Crystal Palace          22 December 2003 22 May 2006        123 50 44 29 40.65
Charlton Athletic       30 May 2006         13 November 2006 15 4 8 3 26.66
