The walsall fans said in the pub that part of the reason was safety for the fans slipping off the seats, and them getting home after the game.
I think you may have bumped into their notorious firm, the Walsall Windowlickers. Never heard anything so ludicrous in my life, apart from possibly the idea that it wasn't possible to clear that pitch with an hour to go. Or that more than a cursory effort at ground maintenance during the afternoon wouldn't have rendered it completely playable. I'm with the conspiracy theorists on this one.

In fairness it would have been played in the 90's... and I will suspect that games will be played this season in those conditions.

The ground staff made little effort
Walsall had major injuries
Floating fans were going to Wolves instead
