I play that formation. My Hoffenheim team are frustrating me... 12 games into the season, i'm 3rd and have only lost one, having played Schalke, Bayern, and a few of the other favourites... all of a sudden i go on a 10 game winless streak, losing to trash such as Bielfeld and 1860. No injuries, no changes in tactics, no unhappy/unfit players.
To reiterate my point from a previous time - i hate FM.

Has anyone tried starting off unemployed and taking the "career" approach? I might have a go at that later.

4 year contract which will take him pretty much up to his twilight years.
He is now valued at 3.1 mill and I don't wanna let him go, and so any offer under 5 mill will be rejected.
I am still in the CCC, (I finished 7th). And I am hoping that the Beast will do it for me in the Prem WHEN I get promoted in my next season.
He's a bit good is Jerel.

After Swindon sacked me I decided to start a game with Las Palmas in Spanish second division.
Changed my tactics to 5-3-2 and had a very good season finishing 6th. Got a new contract and the board are pleased with my management skills. Tied up a link with Valencia so hoping they will send me a few gems and I can kick on this season. My squad is enormous and once you have registered 25 players, you can only choose these boys to play.
As mentioned before Barcelona release Assulin and Bojan who I and about 100 other clubs have tried to sign!!

I think I'm starting to get somewhere now. Started a new game in Italy as Verona and although its early we're sitting top and I haven't lost a game yet (cup and league, thats about 10/11 games). Playing a 4-1-2-2-1

Not scoring loads but we seem to be rock solid at the back. Need to find a way to increase my strikers/wingers shot accuracy, and work out how to create better chances - we seem to be forced into a lot of long shots.

Ok - I am in season 2 with Las Palmas and playing an attacking 5-3-2 formation. Everyone appears to play well apart from my AMC(s) who never get much more than 6.0. I tried setting them as playmakers but this didn't appear to make any difference. I signed Assulin from Barca and he has been even worse than my previous AMC's, averaging a feeble 5.55. I am guessing that the AI is man marking my AMC hence why the ratings are so low. Is there a way to get round this? I guess setting him to never run with the ball and always pass it could be an option?
Anyone else got any ideas?

try setting his attack status lower. he might not have enough space and might not be able to receive the ball.
