If you've ever done any linesman duties at any level, then you know it is mainly guess work and instinct.

 This is because as the survey suggests it is impossible for the human eye and brain to coordinate the necessary information.

 I did once read about a scheme for a series of  electronic grids in the pitch, and then there would be chips in boots and balls, so that the players movements could be tracked on this. The whole thing could then be done by a 4th referee.

Hmmm, sounds interesting. That would mean there would be no need to look at video etc. Could tell ref as it happened.
