Having a debate with a scottish mate about the olympics...

Anyone know off hand the answer to this...

Of the British medals, which country has won the most?

And if it's England, have we won more than the rest combined?

Stat Attack!

Gold:

England = 18
Wales = 3
Scotland = 3

That's without Pete Reed (born Seattle) and Bradley Wiggins (born Belgium)

Silver:

England = 11
Wales = 0
Scotland = 3
Northern Ireland = 1

One from Jamaica, Zimbabwe, USA, Greece and a couple that Wikipedia didn't know.

Bronze:

England = 14
Wales = 0
Scotland = 0

That includes the brilliantly named rower, Stephen Rowbotham, who is supposedly born in Swindon. Woo.

So, yes, England have far more medals than the other countries put together. 80% ish to England...  Smiley

I watched that earlier and he did a fantastic job.

Think GB as a whole have surpassed themselves this olympics.

 It's certainly set things up for 2012....might even allow the government to shell out the odd, promised 100 million  shortfall in funding that teh private sector has failed to find.

I hadn't realised this. I think 3 gold medals from a population of around £3m for Wales is actually pretty good. It would put us about 16th / 17th in the table.

And Scotland with a similar size of population has 3 silvers as well.

 Hopefully by 2012,  Scotland will be competing own their own...can't ever seeing it happen for Wales.

 Fair play to Hoy...he's accepted his funding without complaint...not somethoing Murray would do.

Isn't it worth staying together to beat the Aussies? It's a wonderful thing, I wish we could get more used to it.

 Much cheaper to offload the Scots and pay Aussies to coach our squads, works well enough.

The Population / gold table is an interesting read. Well sort of.

I guess Scotland would end up top of that if they were independent

 On the conventional medal table top ten, the only nation we never seem to have been at war with is the Ukraine...well I suppose you could argue Australia as well.
