It's only a few TCs, why wouldn't they have them? They keep hundreds in stock.

So,  that's your relationship and currency sorted out.

Anything else we can do for you?
Mmmmm.... a job in October could be your next little project, I'm going to be poor when I return.

I've never obtained travellers cheques before. I don't even know how they work, or if I even need them. Just got told to get some.

Ordinarily travellers checks are safer than taking cash but a pain in the arse. IIRC. If you lose them/get robbed you are covered for replacements if you have the stubs (hence safer, don't lose the stubs) but pain in the arse because you need to take the to a beaura du change to convert whatever they are worth to hard currency.

However  I may be wrong but I think a lot of places in the US will take them directly as if they are cash. Not sure if this is only true of US dollar travellers cheques or any currency denomination mind.

Personally prefer debit/credit cards myself.

Definitely treated as cash in mainstream USA. I'm not sure how easy it would be to change them in Tanzania outside of major centres. I'd always take USD rather than Sterling
