I used my own version of Big Brother to teach my year nines about the outbreak of WW1. They love it and every year it floors them when I reveal they've just learnt how WW1 started without any mention of any of the countries or flashpoints. They did, however, tell me that I have used pictures from the American Big Brother  |

I'm sure you're not, as there's just too many interesting comparisons to be made with the current situation in Iraq. I love asking people the question "Where do you think some of the first British troops were deployed at the outbreak of WW1?" Very few people guess at Basra. |

I do hope you're not just sticking to the old "Archduke Ferdinand got shot and it all kicked off" story. No, although clearly it was the excuse the major European nations needed to kick off. Big Brother helps me to explain Alsasce-Lorraine (and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1), German jealousy of the British and French Empires, Austria-Hungary and Russia wanting bits of the Balkans and the issue of the neutrality of Belgium. I can also draw out the system of alliances and rivalries. Obviously there are other factors too, but I'll be covering those next lesson (including Franz Ferdinand). |
