Disagree, we were definitely weaker 2nd half ot that season for me. Simpson was a huge loss.

Davisons goal return was on par with Simpson. I don't have the exact numbers.

Simpson was very over rated by lots on here. Yes powerful and a willing runner but often frustrated a lot as well. I don't for one minute think if we had kept Simpson instead of Davison our season wouldn't changed significantly.

I was unaware Oxford were losing that type of money. every year.
Didn't they sell a couple of players for big money to Brentford or Fulham last season as well ?

The last accounts published are for 21/22 (so things may have changed) but their £4m loss on £6.9m turnover including £866k of player trading income (Rob Atkinson to the slavers). They're about as unsustainable as it comes in league one, but of course the owners are willing to write off £4m loss per year at the moment, not sure if this is loans and whether they're secured etc.

Refreshingly open and transparent though, something we can only imagine at STFC despite the rhetoric from Clem.

Simpson wasn’t much of a loss. Not that I didn’t rate him but Davison more or less filled his boots.

Barry added some dynamism to go on the other side to McKirdy - that added threat made us better imo

The second half of that season was very much like this one - little to complain about in the first XI but just shit all depth. Although looking back, it was absolutely halcyon days for depth - Gladwin, Wollacott, O'Brien, Odimayo on the bench for the playoffs - http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/MatchCentre.asp?MatchID=20220402

Mostly just no attacking cover at all, Davison, Barry and McKirdy got run into the ground. Defensive cover was largely fine.

As stated previously, I think we are only 3 x players short from being a good team.

A Gordon Greer type centre half would do wonders for Minturn. Blewitt moving to CM and Tomlinson would have grown into the home grown local star of the future.

The big dude who signed for Wimbledon.

Suggest that was all what was needed.

12k a week for Cameron Brannagan in league one!

Surely no one at Oxford is earning over 500,000 per year

How do they keep other players satisfied playing in the same team ?

The problem was that we had no backup for either. If we'd had both for the whole season we'd have gone up easily. Davison in particular just never got subbed - he played 90 minutes in every game from Feb 22nd onwards, 16 consecutive games. As a lone striker, clearly fucking knackered.

Simpson scored a very decent goal Crewe away in the cup also (what a great day that was) Just my opinion but feel like Simpson was getting better and better. Signed him as a raw 18/19 year old novice, was unplayable when he was on it. Davison was supposed to come in, had some experience but I feel like he cost us in some games, both play off legs Vs Vale standout.

Fwiw can see Simpson being available in Jan for another loan move, not worked out at Northampton.

Wouldn't disagree at all.

My own perception was that Simpson and McKirdy had a better 'understanding' than Davison/Harry. (that Crewe goal you allude to was beautifully played between them) Personally I think Simpson was getting better and better (I've just realised i've plagiarised you!) and I was gutted when he was recalled. Davison did really well but if I had to choose, I'd have picked Tyreece.

Simpson would be a great signing for us now I think. Assuming leaving us didn't completely cut the legs out on his development.

I will always blame Josh Davison for not squaring the ball to McKirdy at 2-0 in the first leg of the play offs against Vale and then blazing over the bar. That tie would have been done and dusted if he had.
