Gotta be honest I’m struggling to get the excitement here. As JJ pointed out earlier we’ve signed a player who would have likely been a 3rd or 4th choice CB at FGR and with Lavinier going the other was it has net zero impact on squad depth.

The fact we have to seemingly ship players out to get these sort of signing despite already having one of the smallest squads in the league is more than slightly concerning.

Other than Kemp there’s not any real sign of us making a statement of intent. I hope this doesn’t age well and things are very different by the end of the window.

Not sure where third or fourth choice comes from. Looking at their squad they have Ryan Inniss (walking red card) and Moore-Taylor as centre back options. On top of FGR wanting to keep him by offering him a new contract and UGM playing 44 out of 46 league games when they won League 2, I would be surprised if he wasn't starting the vast majority of games there had he stayed.

Why are we assuming he would be FGR’s 3rd or 4th choice centre back? He played a large amount of games last season, was a regular in the title winning season and they offered him a new contract?

That doesn’t sound like someone who would be making up the numbers.
Purely because it fits their agenda. If FGR still had a back 3, Dokes would be their 1st choice, it's only because of the system change that they're proclaiming him to be 3rd or 4th choice. This is a player that the FGR hierarchy genuinely believed they'd eventually sell for near £1mn and had championship teams after him last time his contract was up.

23 years old, fast, over 100 EFL games, offered a contract, highest pass completion of league 2 defender, interest from higher leagues a title winning season under his belt - I think this is a good signing.

You know what it’s like when a player you like is leaving your team no, all of a sudden they weren’t that good anyway.

your missing the fact that the main reason why lavinier is leaving is because UGM would have required a fee. its not just a free signing for a free signing. we are swapping two young players with vastly different numbers in terms of experience and also promotions.

Dion Conroy had the same title winners medal and pass completion stat but couldn’t defend so I take those sort of stats with a pinch of salt. He may be brilliant he may not be but I still wouldn’t describe it as statement signing like some are. The fact we’ve made this signing and it hasn’t actually increased the net strength of the squad is my main gripe. Hopefully with a couple of home games in August the additional cash flow might allow them to strengthen the squad…

And we've swapped a player we're struggling to fit into the line-up for one that plays in a position we really need to fill. Lavinier in his year at the CG has started less than 20 games and played at left back, centre back and midfield and not looked right in any of them.

I'm pretty sure we picked him up thinking we'd get an offer for Hutton in January. From what I remember he was a bit of a last minute grab when the young CB we were after at Spurs knocked us back.

Exactly that - Lavinier wasn’t a first team starter in his favoured position

Plus the guy has already updated his Twitter bio and tweeted how happy he is that it’s done. I love him already.

I assume his song is to the tune of 'It's my life' by Haddaway?

It's Malife, it's Malife Udoka, it's Malife, it's Malife Udoka etc etc?

Hates playing LB/LWB by all accounts. Sees himself as more of a midfielder. Strange.

Sounds like Hutton on the right then. Get ready for some attacking football this season.

Lets hope the centre backs coming in are top quality.

One step forward, one step back.

Great that we finally got a CB. Not so great that we’ve had to sell Lavinier in the process. Lavinier is a decent player & absolutely well worth having in our squad.

We still need to find a replacement for him now.
