What do we reckon Gladwin went for, £50k tops? Reed maybe similar or less? Hard to argue that Williams is worth more than double that?
Would be fascinated to know how much we paid for Cain, Khan, Hutton and so on. The undisclosed fee really spoils all the fun.

is barely worth £100k, albeit there is the contract position to consider.
Its exactly that though isn't it? If he had 18 month on the contract however... I don't think he's "worth" 100K when they can get him in the summer. But even if he's worth 50k, its better for us to keep him surely.

I'd say it was hard to argue Williams isn't worth double a Gladwin, to be honest. I think with the Cains of the world we'd have offered very little up front money, with more based on appearances and maybe a sell on if does well, etc.

I was told that the Clayton and Cain deals were over £250k upfront with addons. Khan and Hutton i was told also around the 70k each up front

Let’s not forget last season when plenty on here were saying we couldn’t play both Gladwin and Williams in the same midfield - and more than a few sided with Gladwin.

For me, a Williams sale comes down to a couple of things - are we OK to cover the remainder of this years budget (you would presume we are) and do we have an adequate replacement in the team (we do not) or about to sign? I am not so sure we'd have a ready to go replacement lined-up, but you never know.
Assuming we are OK on the money side and we do not have a Williams MkII ready, they you keep him. Any move to not keep him suggests small financial gains are worth more to the ownership than getting promotion from this Division. We are not talking game changing sums here.

But what if having no Williams = a spot for an enforcer type.

I imagine Morris would be delighted if we sold out top scorer on his first day in the job.

Williams is worth a lot to the team, he makes things happen on the pitch, any replacement would need time to bed in and get to know the other players, while Williams is not irreplaceable if we are serious about promotion this season then I think he needs to stay

Those are... larger numbers than I expected. Particularly the up-front element, I could see Clayton/Cain having big sell on fees or extra money if we go up etc. Dropping £600k+ up front and still having people talk about doing things on the cheap would sting if you were signing the cheques, wouldn't it!

I think fending off interest for Williams today and getting him to sign a new deal in the next few weeks would be a massive statement of intention for the club. Obviously if Hibs offer something silly like 200k (they won't) then that's another story but I agree, I think he has to stay. Perhaps the ambition shown in the managerial appointments may also play a big part in what his thinking is for his future. A 2 year deal would be lovely.

we've been to Aberdeen, we hate the Hibs, they make us spew up, so make some noise, the gorgie boys, for Hearts in Europe.

But what's the incentive for Williams to sign a new deal now?
