Not sure about his clamour to get rid of MacDonald. We’ve spent god knows how many years saying we need a no nonsense defending centre back and he’s it. A lot of people posing the question ‘MacDonald or FBT?’ Well why not both as we have now? Since when has it become a straight choice between the two?

Agreed!

Not that I think they have played much together but I wouldn't like to see a Greer/Cuthbert situation with MacDonald or FBT/Clayton -  where the latter suffered massively by the former's departure.

We have FBT, so that will help. Unless we don't.

I still like FBT at LB honestly. With Clayton as the LCB. If McDonald leaves we need a right side CB, as we would just have Brennan right?

Lindsey describing Gladwin as ‘big and physical’. I’ve never seen a player pull out of so many tackles as Ben - that’s when he actually bothers to put in a tackle.

He's an excellent defender of set pieces, was one of our best. He is quite a lot less use in open play.

He's quite handy defending in some circumstances I suppose. But tackling isn't is strong point is it. Nor heading sometimes. Maybe not so handy at defending..

The amount of time I've seen the man he is supposed to be marking run right by him is infuriating. If you bought a job lot of rockets for someone to shove up his ass every ten minutes, he'd be a decent player.

True.

But some of his passing is superb. Maybe a bit too patchy in frequency. I was hoping that and and a new approach (i.e. not 1 up top) would unlock defences.

But I don't know what Cain is like. Can he do that?

Definitely looks like it based on YouTube highlights and Newport fan references. Hopefully that is the case.

This is a pretty stupid comparison, but for some reason Arsenal sprang to mind when you said that, (and they will probably blow up during the run in) I checked their squad and they really only have 3 players that are in their thirties - Soares (31), Xhaka (30), Elneny (30). Partay is 29 and Trossard 28 but aside from then everyone else is in their early to mid twenties.

Charlie and Jonny Williams for me are the experienced older heads in the squad that I reckon we are going to rely on at the back. I personally would prefer to have someone more experienced at the back, can you call FBT experienced? He certainly leads by example on the field of play.

We went through this whole debate before in the days of our link up with the Spurs youth set up. Eventually we concluded that we could probably cope with an older leader in each area of the field.

But, and it's a fucking big but (which I like and I cannot lie.......etc.) it's not really that relevant to our team now. In our last game our back 4's average age was 25. The starting midfield - 26. Up front 3 - 25.

Ok Charlie ups the forward line a bit, but these aren't teenagers ffs.  A lot of our first team squad is 22 to 26. We've a handful older and the same younger (not including the academy graduates. And two of the 21 year olds Brynn and Clayton have been excellent.

I'm not sure why people seem perfectly happy having a 21 yr old keeper, a position that tends to mature late 20s but are so uncomfortable with our central defensive choices being 26, 22, 21 and 25 (once Harries is fit) plus whoever we bring in if we do sell McD. And Iandolo, he's not really a senior player at 24 and ..... well he's sort of an alright 4th division player isn't he. Up until last year he'd not really held down a regular place in the side. Not sure he's vs leader in the pitch either.

Huge difference between Experience and agae as well tbh. Hutton has played over 100 league games now, Shade nearly 100 league games too. Jephcott over 100 and even Darcy has nearly 70. I am not saying we don't need exprience but we are not as naive and young either as some make out

dolo has been here ages, he's senior to my eyes.

maybe you are right. one in every department is enough.

the keeper is an odd one, we've done really well with benda, Brynn, Fods and Vigs. We did have older backup mind for those.

Rovers signed Grant Ward this week so I’d be surprised if it’s them.
