I’m sure I read somewhere that 1 August is the date when most signings are announced. A player’s previous club pays him up until the 31 July unless he gets a club in the meantime. Maybe it’s just a financial thing, or we’re waiting for the last part of the umbongo to get lifted so we can fine tune their contracts.

Well, yes and no. If a player has reached the end of his contract and has not found another club, he gets one month’s extra pay for July. There’s a big hoo ha between York and Bradford re Clayton Donaldson whereby Bradford are moaning that they are still paying his wages for July but York are playing and marketing him although his contract with them doesn’t start until 1 Aug. |

They are. First team are at Portsmouth, there reserves are at Swindon. |
