He was a decent player for 8 month of a 3 year contract. He's only made 27 starts in the last 2 years. Not worth the risk and need someone more mobile to play of Benson, who is twice the player Paynter is.

Paynter started to improve once Wilson arrived, before that was at best average.
Also, I really don't think he would cope under Paolo.

Yeah, let's re-sign Paynter, the same man who said he was going to sign a new contract and fucked off to Leeds at the earliest opportunity.
This.

I'd have Paynter back in a flash. He holds the ball up well, links the play excellently and scores goals. He wont come back here though, think he'll stay in the championship.
Howard is better than Holmes on the left wing, and is a better goal threat in the middle than anything we currently have. Will he work they way PDC demands, doubt it.
Now Harry is staying at spurs surely we have a reasonable chance of getting bostock on loan all next year as well?

He can come live with me and EVERYTHING.
Also massively improved after McGhee put him through some tough training.

I don't think we should be re-signing Paynter, but I had no problem with the way he left, and thought we treated him badly with regards to not offering him a contract until the very last minute after Leeds had already come in. He'd scored loads, and had a young family to think about and had no security towards the end of his spell here.
But maybe I've remembered it wrong.

Funny how people remember different things. I don't remember, for example, Paynter saying he was going to sign a new contract. I remember that it was offered to him and it would have been one of the best contracts ever offered to any player at the time.....but I don't remember him saying he was going to sign it. Football fans are a special lot - they expect players to show undying loyalty to a team when they are playing well and then casually discuss on message boards like this which players should be discarded and which should stay. At the end of the day players have their livelihoods to consider - they have families to support just like the rest of us. If a better offer crops up then they have every right to accept it. Who, in their right mind, would turn down a move to a better, bigger, club for lots more money, out of loyalty?......oh, yes.....step forward James Constable. The only people loyal to a football club are the fans - and they aren't getting paid.

I mostly agree with this. There are other factors that come into play sometimes eg. Family, longer term aspirations, playing vs bench warming etc. From what I remember Paynter was offered considerably more my Leeds than we could offer - Even though our offer was a substantial increase on his previous contract (if rumours at the time were right). So, if I were him, I'd have jumped too! The thing that grates a little is that it appeared as if he had this sorted out and didn't appear try as hard in the last few weeks. There was a question mark about whether he was injured or whether he was protecting himself so that he could sign for Leeds at the end of the season. Would I have him back now? Only if he could show that he was hungry to resurrect his career - like Benson. I would want him on a small contract with a large win bonus - But I doubt whether someone rumoured to be on £8k per week for the last 3 years would want that!
