Sounds like a deal for an experienced CB fell through( after being offered a 'very, very good deal') and that was the catalyst for us going for Benn Ward according to Flynn's quotes on today's Adver article.

Wasn't the quote more 'we understand the value of experience', which gives them a get out!?

Seems a strange plan B. Miss out on experienced CB so sign a inexperienced 18 year old instead.

Or getting a cheap arse on a seat for the start of the season whilst considering more experienced options before the window slams shut.

Depends on how you define experience.
Of our 7 signings so far only the keeper and Ward could arguably be described as out and out rookies.

He's probably one of the more experienced 18 year olds you could sign as he's been playing mens competitive football since 16 having left Brighton's youth set up to play non league in order to do that. I think he got a season and a bit in before Burnley nabbed him.

So at least he's not played nothing but development games.

Interesting regarding the experience argument still. First game last season the starting 11 had 1306 games in the football and premier league and the bench had 133 games

Saturday just gone the starting 11 had 1003 and the bench had 376 on it.

So, I make that that this season has approx. 60 less is it but last seasons did have

That shows where we fucked up last year if anything.

We started with some experience and a bunch of novices - the team was pretty poor by usual standards but by hook or by crook we stayed in the hunt until end of November ish I think.

We offloaded or lost ALL that experience bar Williams and adding Austin, replaced with novices and fell off a cliff.

The interesting stat would be how many combined games did the team who played in the last match of the season have? Nowhere near enough, especially if you take out Charlie.

My Swindon supporting mate who lives in Southampton and watches them regularly with his season ticket holding wife said:

"Fucking no thanks"

Odd - he was cheered on by Saints fans whenever he came on the pitch - I had a season ticket for three years or so. Opinions and all that.....

The Shane Long that signed for Saints in 2014,  2 years before Charlie Austin?  Hmmm
