"Tom Brewitt is a 26 year old central defender who most recently appeared for Hartford leaving the club in December of last year. He has also been on the books of Morecambe, Fylde, Tacoma Defiance, Liverpool and Middlesbrough. He is also a former England U17 international. The club are hopeful of completing the contract today with discussions currently ongoing."

It's not a stellar recent pedigree, but the last free agent we picked up has gone well, so fingers crossed this is a diamond deep in the rough.

Isn't Hartford the team from Dream Team?

He also comes with a little history

Born in Liverpool, Brewitt played youth football for Liverpool (where he spent 10 years, including serving as captain in the FA Youth Cup) and Middlesbrough.[3][4] In October 2020 Brewitt admitted that when he was a Liverpool youth player he had deliberately injured his teammate Daniel Cleary in training to try and improve his own chances of being picked for the first team.[5][6]

The same Whelan that said we were signing Mariappa earlier in the week?

He Didn’t say it was him, but Morris did confirm someone was due to sign but changed their mind.
I wonder if it was because he felt he had the upper hand and wanted a longer deal

I would say so.

EDIT - I've asked an American friend who follows Tacoma (Seattle's 2nd team) & he said from memory he wasn't too bad, never made it to the Seattle side which could be a worry. Time will tell mind you......was also told this & have found the article.

Bloody hell playing in the league below MLS that they can't even get promoted/relegated between.

Still, beggars can't be choosers.

‘ Sources have revealed that moments before Mariappa was due to put pen to paper he had a sudden change of heart for an unspecified reason and backed out of the deal despite having trained with the club for the past couple of weeks. The Manager and senior decision makers in the club had been hopeful of changing his mind however the deal has now fallen through with no signs of resurrection leaving Morris to cope with just 4 fit defenders for tomorrow’s game.

The club have acted quickly and have offered Tom Brewitt, another free agent who has been training with the club a contract until the end of the season. He is understood to be finalising the details today. The timing of Adrian Mariappa pulling out of the deal has not left enough time for the Brewitt deal to be completed in time for the deadline.’

Presuming another club got wind of Mariappa and offered him something more.

Credit where it is due Morris is getting players into training to have a look at them and then deciding whether to sign them rather than accepting he has to wait until next season, I bet Sandro is upset his spreadsheet isn't helping though.

Definitely seems the spreadsheet is completely redundant now and its for the best. McEachran was seriously inspired and makes me want to see what Morris can do with a summer window.

Let's hope sooner rather than later Clem gets the message that to get out of league 2 you need to get in decent experienced players who may not have much sell on value.

Wouldn't go that far. To be fair there probably is a big place in recruiting for stats. Bit more limited in the out of contract pool.

Place for both IMO.

Whether Sandro should be "stats man" and whether the search parameters (u24, wages) can/should be changed are different questions entirely.
