I wanted to like Pitman. A cult hero of sorts?, maybe, but not for the right reasons.
With the way that the game is played these days there is an ever decreasing niche for a middle aged looking player with a paunch whose top speed is a pedestrian waddle.

Still, he managed 11 goals in the league and that despite spending most of the season hiding at the back post behind two giant CB's and then complaining when the ball didn't reach him.

He's in some good company in the list of top scorers in our relegation seasons.
He won't be held in as high regard as some of the others.

He didn't fit the way we played under Wellens at all, he was a piece of a puzzle that never got finished and that was where I think Wellens wanted Norwood next to him.

He would have definitely scored goals for us in League 2, but you have to build your attack around him.

He would have been on big wages so at least that frees it up for someone that wants to be here.

Pitman was possibly the slowest, laziest, most unfit player I have ever seen at Town.

Of course he will score goals if he gets service in the box, trouble is most teams can mark him out of the game because he doesn't have the pace to run past them.

If you can build a team around a bloke that will never be further than 35 yards from the opposition goal and won't do any work to help the team then do it.

He was in our top 3 highest paid players last season so it frees up a lot of wages for players who actually want to be at the club. Players who will run, track back, tackle defenders and get and stay fit.

I have no doubt if they can get him fit hes a 15 goals a season striker, something we don't have currently, but when you need players to muck in during games....Pitman is not your man.

The first sentence would be an interesting debate; Ruddock versus Pitman in 100 metre waddle?

The rest is bang on. I imagine he would be Premier League standard in walking football.

I don’t think Nalis was unfit
He was old, slow and injured a lot

Pitman gets a bad press because of his laconic style and scruffy demeanour, but he has a great eye for goal and - not a negligible bonus last year - was better than most of our CHs at defending set pieces. It wasn't his fault that our retarded part-time manager thought he could play him as a target man with no-one within 20 yards of him on the pitch.

For unfit, I give you Andy Rollings. Now he was a proper disgrace.

I remember saying that he hoped he hadn’t made a mistake signing Pitman.

He’s only 1 in a long list of mistakes last season.

Rovers fans seem over the moon with with him.

Quote
Hope he stays fit and is (almost) ready in a weeks time…
He seems like a good professional so should be looking after himself

Excellent signing experienced and a poacher plus intelligent footballer.

Extremely happy with this

Quality player on a free transfer, I'm happy with that if he stays injury free

Finally! a decent striker to complete the team now all we need is a manager.

he's a proven goalscorer, has years left in him and can show an array of goals.
He will also provide the leadership and nurturing of the younger members of the squad.
Fearsome line up now I think

"Lots of Swindle fans saying they're happy to see the back of him, "slow","unfit", "overweight"...let's hope they're wrong!"
Despite which they tried to exercise a 1 year extension to his contract ....... only failing as they had not bothered paying him.
Scored double figures in a poor Swindon side in L1 so happy with him in L2.

Fantastic signing even now. Age only really makes a difference(within reason) if the player was a quick one.

Rovers fans go all jizzy every season no matter what dross they sign.

How can they think Pitman is a great signing. He’s OK. He’ll probably get 10-15 goals if he stays injury free (and that’s not a given). But they’ll have to play a slow build up style so he can amble into position.

Plus, the fucker backed Sheridan last season and on that basis alone

All the breast, good luck and fuck ya!

As for slow/lazy/unfit players if you look at the the names mentioned, and yes they were all a bit unfit/lazy etc so all have a case, but Pitman played in the 1st team a lot more than any of them so was unfit/lazy for longer Smiley

Dryden 7 games
Rollings 12 games
Ruddock 15 games
Nalis 24 games
Whalley 24 games
Pitman 37 games!

Yeah pretty much that, although not sure he was a fan of Sheridan.

Looking at his pics in the Rovers shirt he looks to have come back after pre season bigger than when he signed for us last season.

They might at least have chosen a more flattering angle.

Surprised he didn’t go to Exeter because stripes flatter the larger figure.
