A lot of them who end up in England, get scouted as kids playing in youth football and are then brought over into Academies. Someone like Shane Long... played 1 game for Cork.
Yes, but he also played in the Championship the same year he played for Cork.

Not a lot there going into England's first two Divs.... not a problem for us if we can find a couple good enough for Div 4. I remember the Scummers getting hugely excited when they signed Hoban from Dundalk, where he had a decent record. 3 goals in 43 games

Seamus O' Rouke who plays for dundalk, would make a very good signing. He can play at wingback, just for the craic, and can also take care of the Ironing. Thankyou

Seamus Coleman probably the best example but there have been a steady stream of decent talent from ROI
There has been the odd one or two.... but a steady stream Scots used to be a bit more than a steady stream, but since the influx of foreigners, you'll certainly find more French, Spanish, Portuguese, various Africans etc than Irishmen. As I said, its often the case the players get picked up at youth football level and then are brought to academies, so never drop down to LoI level.

The notion of half decent has not been used.... the statement that players regularly leave the LoI for the top 2 Divs in England has been used. I don't think it's the case, but happy to be proved wrong. Try joining the debate and produce some names and perhaps numbers. BO's list is interesting but for me, suggests that of those that do come over the majority perhaps make it with a Div 3 or 4 club or end up in Scotland.

You mentioned that there might be the chance of the odd good player out there & subsequently asked who they were which was followed by a list that proves the LOI has produced players who go onto play in the top two Divs in England. Where was it mentioned that players regularly leave the LOI for the top two Divs in England? Somebody mentioned a steady stream?? The term of half decent was the descriptive term I used to describe the mentioned players. Or is there a narrative I need to be following? & Seamus Coleman would have been my example (already mentioned). He cost something ridiculous around the £30k mark from memory.

Stop digging. Unless you intend to hop over a fence at a certain sports field with a trowel about forty miles east of here.

I suppose it's a question of numbers. There's no doubt that Ireland has produced some good players in the past, but the traditional route like say a Robbie Keane, Liam Brady or a Shay Given was to get spotted playing youth football, in the same way as would happen for kids in England.... That is now much harder.... https://www.theguardian.com/football/these-football-times/2014/aug/29/ireland-irish-players-premier-league It is of course possible there will be the odd few RoI players who make it through, in the same way as a Charlie Austin and Jamie Vardy can make it from English non league football.... it is however the exception which proves the rule. That the LoI is ranked 37/55 on the UEFA coefficient of league level, gives some indicator of standards, based on the last 4 years in Euro comps. Higher than the League of Wales but below Leichtenstein
