For me, it's nothing to do with him being an ex-player as such. It's more about the fact that he's got a damned scoring record at L1 level (specifically for us) and it's reasonable to assume that scoring goals in L2 for him would be like shooting fish in a barrel which would enhance our chances of promotion manyfold.
There's obviously a good chance that a L1 Club will want him and no doubt the player himself will want to play higher than L2 but on the other hand, there is clearly something in the air and/or water at Swindon that agrees with him and that may just tempt him back if we are indeed persuing him. I don't know about this Flitctroft 'Alpha Male' thing, I would have hoped he's more pragmatic than that but time will tell. Stranger things have happened though and I can't believe anyone wouldn't want him just because he's played for us before.
I'll repeat that history tells us the 3 times we've been promoted out of this league, we haven't had a 20 goal striker. In fact in Div 4, we've only ever had one 20 goal striker, Paul Rideout with 20 in 82/83. We didn't go up, nor would the 8th place have got us a PO spot had it been available. Rather you need goals around the squad, with the front men working hard as well as chipping in. So 85/86 leading scorer, Charlie Henry a full back converted to midfield. 06/07 Christian Roberts and Lee Peacock both with 10. The PdC sseason Benson and Connell with 11 each. I suspect that Flitcroft will favour graft over goals in his front men, hence NA not being his type.

Just because it so happens that we got promoted from L2 on previous occasions without an out and out goal scorer doesn't mean you don't try to get one this time around. That makes no sense at all. I also happen to think this idea about him not working hard is a myth, as suggested by a previous poster.

The sense is in the fact that a proven goalscorer is going to take a fair chunk of your budget..... Flitcroft may prefer, to use the money elsewhere. If you look at say Pompey, who won Div 4 last year, their 2 leading scorers were Kai Naismith and Gary Roberts with 14 and 10. Plenty of others chipping in.... Naismith is a winger who can play up front... Roberts we know about. Naismith, Pompey picked up from Accrington. I just don't see Flitcroft sticking a large chunk of his budget into NA... I'm assuming here of course that Power isn't pulling his strings.

I been told by someone who is usually spot on with these things that we are busting a bollock to get Ahose back. Also been told Turnball wants to come back here and has basically offered himself to us. Up to flitctoft if he wants him

If you ask any Pompey supporter they will all tell you all they missed last season was a consistant goalscorer so with one they would have walked the league and not just won it on the final day of the season. And I think its safe to say that Power will be in control of the budget but allowing DF to name targets and he will get the best deals for them, something most chairmen/directors of football do at clubs, the manager finds the target the board/chairman deal with the signing....unless you are Harry Redknapp.....

The fact that Pompey fans might tell me something doesn't mean I'm likely to believe it to be true, likewise most other fans. If you look at last season's top ten Div 4 leading scorers... only 1 John Marquis was at a side promoted.. Donny. I had been told we were interested in Marquis, when he left Millwall, where he was regarded by their fans as useless. Pymuff's leading scorer Carey, some way down the list, outside the top ten like Pompey's is a midfieder.

So what you are saying is...because we've gotten promoted in the past without a prolific striker and the promoted sides last season managed it without one, we shouldn't even try to sign one? As I said before, that makes no sense...

No, what he is saying is that you don't have to sacrifice the balance of the team to accommodate a prolific goalscorer. Most teams that are successful in L2 have goals scored by multiple players from different positions.

No the point is that an Ajose would take a hefty chunk of the budget... like say a Hylton did at Luton or a Collins at Crawley. Both scored a decent number of goals, neither went up. It could be that to get the striker you forego a left back... it's the lack of the left back which may cost you promotion. What you need is a balanced squad.

I'd happily see Ajose back, I'm just not sure that DF would be keen (despite the links).
I'd like to see Ajose in a more aggressive Town side. His Swindon career coincided with the fluffy, unsuccessful era.
Also, I notice some folk on Twitter mention the potential return of Jordan Turnbull. Has anyone else heard this?

Only on here...I thought he was alright to be fair. I think I may be in a minority with that view.

Why would we want him back with our current defensive options. Would be a waste of a wage.

I was thinking the same, although one injury could leave us looking a little short.
