I reckon if you map it it'll solve the problem.

I think i love you Sam. I just mapped it and started the backup, already everything seems better. I can access the drive quickly and everything! Just to appease my inquisitive nature, what purpose does that serve exactly? Also, my drive is constantly disconnected, reconnected, turned on, turned off, and ip changed, will this mean i have to remap everytime - not that it's problem - or will my drive be forever mapped? Thank you Sam and Si Pie, i was getting so fucked off. I owe you both one. Big time.

When you map it there's a tick box for 'reconnect at logon'. Just tick it and the drive will automatically be mapped every time Windows starts.
By mapping it, you've given the drive a physical address on the network so Windows will recognise it as a storage drive. Otherwise you're just remotely accessing it each time like you would a website for example.

Anything i can do to return the favour, just let me know. I'm indebted to you both.

I'd already thought of that. It was fine after McFly put some garbage in it in 10 years time.

I have some good as new parts kicking around if either of you want them as payment. I have a 100GB sata laptop drive and a 2.5" USB2 IDE enclosure? The drive is out of my lapper, prior to this forced upgrade and the enclosure is of no use because i mistakenly bought it for the old drive, without checking to see if it had sata connectors prior to marking it with a screw driver. This thread has "i'm a bit of a tosspot" written through it like rock.

You can have it. I have no use for it and will only lose it or break it. Let me know.

You can get programs that can recover all of your files - even after re-formatting any suggestions or links to where I can obtain such a program?
